Tulsa Golden Hurricanes Men's Basketball
The Tulsa Golden Hurricane men's basketball team represents the University of Tulsa in Tulsa, in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The team participates in the American Athletic Conference. The Golden Hurricane are led by head coach Eric Konkol, hired from Louisiana Tech on March 21, 2022, to replace Frank Haith who had resigned. The team has long been successful, especially since the hiring of Nolan Richardson in 1980. Many big-name coaches previously worked at Tulsa, like University of Kansas coach Bill Self and Minnesota coach Tubby Smith. The Hurricane have been to the NCAA tournament 14 times in their history. In addition, they have won two National Invitation Tournaments, in 1981 and 2001, and one CBI tournament. The University of Tulsa (TU) is a Private university, private research university in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It has a historic affiliation with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Presbyterian Church, although it is now nondenominational, and the campus architectural style is predominantly Collegiate Gothic. The school traces its origin to the Presbyterian School for Indian Girls, which was established in 1882 in Muskogee, Oklahoma, then a town in Indian Territory, and which evolved into an institution of higher education named Henry Kendall College by 1894. 2008 College Basketball Invitational
The 2008 College Basketball Invitational (CBI) was a single-elimination tournament of 16 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I teams that did not participate in the 2008 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament or the 2008 National Invitation Tournament. The inaugural tournament began on March 18 on campus sites and ended on April 4, won by the University of Tulsa, defeating their former Missouri Valley Conference rivals Bradley University in the best-of-three final. Tulsa center Jerome Jordan was the tournament MVP. The CBI was the first newly created post-season tournament since the Collegiate Commissioners Association Tournament in 1974. The opening round was played on March 18 and 19, 2008 with the second round being played on March 24 and the semifinals on March 26. Bingo Smith
Robert "Bingo" Smith (February 26, 1946 – October 26, 2023) was an American professional basketball player. He played for the San Diego Rockets, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the San Diego Clippers. College career Smith played for the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. It was there where he got his nickname of Bingo when Len Morton, the announcer, would yell "Bingo" each time he scored. Playing career With the sixth pick in the first round of the 1969 NBA draft, the San Diego Rockets selected Smith. A year later, he was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 1970 Expansion Draft. In his first game with the team, he scored 21 points. He helped contribute to the Cavaliers winning the NBA Central Division title in 1976, and was part of the Miracle at Richfield, winning Game 2 of the Semifinals vs the Washington Bullets. Jim King (basketball, Born 1941)
James Staton "Country" King (born February 7, 1941) is an American retired professional basketball player and former college coach. A 6'2" guard from the University of Tulsa, King was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round of the 1963 NBA draft. King played 10 NBA seasons (1963–1973) with four teams: the Lakers, the San Francisco Warriors, the Cincinnati Royals, and the Chicago Bulls. He represented the Warriors in the 1968 NBA All-Star Game, and he retired with 4,377 career points. King later coached the Tulsa Golden Hurricane from 1975 to midway through the 1979–1980 season, when he resigned after seasons. Gary Collier (basketball)
Gary Collier (born October 8, 1971) is an American former college and professional basketball player who attended the University of Tulsa. Collier played four seasons for the Golden Hurricane and was named the 1994 MVC player of the year. He led the 1994 NCAA Tournament in scoring average with 31.3 points per game. Collier was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2nd round of the 1994 NBA draft; however, he never played in the NBA. He played the 1994–95 season with the Quad City Thunder in the Continental Basketball League. Collier then took his game in Europe. He played his first two seasons for the Antwerp Diamond Giants. Jerry Wainwright
Gerald Charles Wainwright Jr. (born February 11, 1947) is an American former basketball coach. Wainwright served as the head men's basketball coach at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNC Wilmington) from 1994 to 2002, the University of Richmond from 2002 to 2005, and DePaul University from 2005 to 2010. Ron Jirsa
Ronald Howard Jirsa (born December 21, 1959) is an American college basketball coach who is currently an assistant coach at Eastern Kentucky. He was previously the head coach at Georgia and Marshall. Early life and education Jirsa was born in New London, Connecticut and grew up in nearby Ledyard. After graduating from Ledyard High School in 1977, Jirsa attended Gettysburg College. Michael Andre Anderson (born December 12, 1959) is an American basketball coach, most recently the head coach of the St. John's Red Storm. He came to St. John's after previously serving as head coach at UAB, Missouri and Arkansas. He also served as an assistant/associate head coach under Nolan Richardson at Arkansas for 17 years. Kevin James O'Neill (born January 24, 1957) is an American basketball coach with experience as the head coach of various college and National Basketball Association (NBA) teams. Most recently he was the coach of the USC Trojans basketball team. O'Neill was born in Malone, New York and attended McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Philip Daniel "Flip" Saunders (February 23, 1955 – October 25, 2015) was an American basketball player and coach. During his career, he coached the La Crosse Catbirds, Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons, and Washington Wizards. High school and college player Saunders was born in Cleveland, Ohio in February 1955. Billy Clyde Gillispie ( ; born November 7, 1959), also known by his initials BCG and Billy Clyde, is an American college basketball and current men's basketball coach at Tarleton State. Gillispie had previously been head coach at UTEP, Texas A&M, Kentucky, and Texas Tech. Frederick Douglas Wojcik (pronounced WO-jick) (born April 12, 1964) is an American college basketball coach, former player, and former Naval officer. Currently, he is the Associate Head Coach for Tom Izzo at Michigan State University. An NCAA Division I head coach for nine years, Wojcik has averaged 20 wins per season while compiling an overall record of 178–121 (.595), and an overall conference record of 88–58 (.602).
