Triple J
Triple J is an Australian government-funded national radio station founded in 1975 as a division of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). It aims to appeal to young listeners of alternative music, and plays far more Australian content than commercial networks. The station was set up under the Gough Whitlam government, wanting to extend the appeal of the ABC to young Australians. Initially broadcasting as 2JJ or Double Jay from 19 January 1975, it stood apart from commercial stations with its lack of private advertising and its fringe music programming. Following a transition to FM in 1981, the station rebranded as 2JJJ or Triple J as it expanded regionally throughout the 1990s. Two spin-off digital stations were launched in the early 2010s: Double J aims to appeal to more mature audiences, and Triple J Unearthed plays only unsigned, local musicians. List Of Triple J Programs
This is a list of programs broadcast on Australian youth radio station Triple J. For a list of presenters, see ''List of Triple J presenters''. On weekdays, Triple J broadcasts at least five full-service programs: ''Breakfast'' from 6:00 am, then ''Mornings'' from 9:00 am, ''Lunch'' from noon, ''Drive'' from 3:30–5:30 pm then 6:00–7:00 pm, and ''Hack'', which broadcasts for a half-hour during ''Drive'' from 5:30 pm. ''Hack'' is a current affairs program, and no music is broadcast in its time slot. The J Awards are an annual series of Australian music awards, established by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's youth-focused radio station Triple J, and which also extend to sister stations, Triple J Unearthed and Double J. The Triple J Hottest 100 is an annual music poll presented by the publicly-funded Australian youth radio station Triple J. Members of the public are invited to vote for their favourite Music of Australia, Australian and alternative music of the year in an online poll conducted two weeks prior to the new year. The first countdown in 1989 was held in March, and then on various days in January and February until 1998 when it was mostly consistently held on Australia Day. Since 2017, the countdown has been held on the fourth weekend of January due to increasing Australia Day debate, controversy about Australia Day regarding its marking of the History of Australia (1788–1850), colonisation of Australia and dispossession of Indigenous Australians, Indigenous people. One Night Stand (festival)
One Night Stand is an annual music festival held in various regional Australian towns that is organised and promoted by national youth radio station Triple J. It started in 2004 in Natimuk, Victoria, and ran every year until 2019, with one break in 2015 for the broadcaster's Beat the Drum event. One Night Stand did not run for four years from 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but returned to Warrnambool, Victoria in 2024 despite a series of major Australian festivals cancelling due to financial difficulties. In the early years of the One Night Stand, the host town was selected in the form of a competition where residents of the town had to gain approval from their local government as well as find a suitable venue.
