Triple J Hottest 100
The Triple J Hottest 100 is an annual music poll presented by the publicly-funded Australian youth radio station Triple J. Members of the public are invited to vote for their favourite Music of Australia, Australian and alternative music of the year in an online poll conducted two weeks prior to the new year. The first countdown in 1989 was held in March, and then on various days in January and February until 1998 when it was mostly consistently held on Australia Day. Since 2017, the countdown has been held on the fourth weekend of January due to increasing Australia Day debate, controversy about Australia Day regarding its marking of the History of Australia (1788–1850), colonisation of Australia and dispossession of Indigenous Australians, Indigenous people. Typically, on the day after the Hottest 100, Triple J broadcasts the Hottest 200 (songs 200–101). The Triple J Hottest 100, Hottest 100 of Australian Songs will be counted down by Australian youth radio station Triple J on 26 July 2025. Celebrating the broadcaster's 50th anniversary, it will be the first time the Hottest 100 polls exclusively Music of Australia, Australian songs, with music from all prior years eligible. Triple J Hottest 100, 1993
The 1993 Triple J Hottest 100, counted down in January 1994, was the inaugural countdown of the most popular songs of the year, according to listeners of the Australian radio station Triple J (as opposed to previous incarnations of the poll, where listeners could vote on any recorded song from any time in history); the change to make the countdown an annual poll was made after organisers realised that the poll's results were unlikely to significantly change from year to year. About 50,000 votes were counted for this countdown. A double CD featuring 32 of the songs was released. This compilation was, and many of the ones to follow in future years were, some of the highest-selling CDs in Australia. "Asshole" is a song by American comedian Denis Leary, released as the only single from his album '' No Cure for Cancer'' in 1993. The 1991 Triple J Hottest 100 was the third yearly poll of the most popular songs, according to listeners of the Australian radio station Triple J. This was the final annual countdown in which listeners could vote for songs released in any year. There was no poll in 1992, and from 1993 onwards, the poll was restricted to songs released the same year. Supplementary "Hottest 100 of All Time" polls allowing songs from any year were held in 1998 and 2009. This was also the first poll to feature a publicly announced list of songs in positions #101 to #200. The list was posted on the Triple J website in their Hottest 100 History section until late 2004 under 1992. Despite this, an audio clip from the 1991 Hottest 100 features the announcer jokingly playing "Black or White" by Michael Jackson at the number one song before saying it was actually #113 (although the actual list shows it reached #112). Joy Division
Joy Division were an English Rock music, rock band formed in Salford in 1976. The group consisted of vocalist, guitarist and lyricist Ian Curtis, guitarist and keyboardist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook and drummer Stephen Morris (musician), Stephen Morris. Sumner and Hook formed the band after attending a June 1976 Sex Pistols concert.
