Triathlon At The 2016 Summer Olympics – Men's
The men's triathlon at the 2016 Summer Olympics took place at Fort Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro on 18 August. A total of 55 men from 31 nations competed in the race. Alistair Brownlee from Great Britain became the first man to defend his Olympic triathlon title after his previous win at the 2012 Summer Olympics. His younger brother Jonathan Brownlee finished in second place and added another Olympic medal to his collection after his bronze from 2012. Henri Schoeman took the bronze and became the first South African to win an Olympic triathlon medal, finishing just ahead of compatriot Richard Murray. Course The event took place in Fort Copacabana. It consisted of a single 1.5 kilometres swim lap along the Copacabana beach. The competitors then completed a 38.48 kilometres bike leg consisting of eight 4.81 kilometres laps. Fort Copacabana
Fort Copacabana (, ) is a military base at the south end of the beach that defines the district of Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The base is open to the public and contains the ''Museu Histórico do Exército'' (Army Historical Museum) and a coastal defense fort that is the actual Fort Copacabana. History The fort is built on a headland that originally contained a small chapel holding a replica of the Virgen de Copacabana, the patron saint of Bolivia. In 1908 the Brazilian army started to build a modern coastal defense fort on the headland to protect both the beach of Copacabana and the entrance to the harbour of Rio de Janeiro. The fort, completed in 1914, consists of two armoured cupolas, one holding a pair of Krupp cannons, and the other a pair of Krupp cannons. Vincent Luis (born 27 June 1989 in Vesoul, France) is a French professional triathlete. Besides his many WTS wins and his participation in the 2012 Summer Olympics and 2016 Summer Olympics, he won the ITU World Championship in 2019 and 2020, and the Mixed Relay Team World Championship with the French national team in 2015, 2018 and 2019. He won the Junior World Championship and Junior European Championship in 2008, as well as multiple French national titles over the years. Luis also competes in Super League Triathlon. Ryan Sissons (born 24 June 1988) is a New Zealand triathlete. Born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, Sissons represented New Zealand at the 2012 London Olympics in the triathlon where he finished 33rd.
