Triathlon At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's
The women's triathlon was part of the triathlon at the 2008 Summer Olympics programme. It was the third appearance of the event, which was established in 2000. The competition was held on Monday, August 18, 2008 at the Triathlon Venue at the Ming Tomb Reservoir in Shisanling. Fifty-five triathletes from thirty nations competed. For the first time in Olympic history, all three medalists finished the race in less than two hours. Competition format The race was held over the "international distance" (also called "Olympic distance") and consisted of swimming, , road cycling, and road running. Triathlon Venue
The Ming Tombs Reservoir or the Shisanling Reservoir (十三陵水库) is a dam in Changping District of northern Beijing, China. Named for the Ming tombs nearby, it is the lower reservoir of the Shisanling Pumped Storage Power Station. The earth-fill embankment dam is high and long. The dam creates a reservoir that can store of water and contains a controlled chute spillway. History The Ming Tombs Reservoir was built in only four months by hundreds of thousands of workers who labored around the clock. In 2008, the reservoir was one of the nine temporary venues of the Beijing Olympics. It was used for the Triathlon events at the 2008 Summer Olympics, during which it was known as the Triathlon Venue (). Kiyomi Niwata
Kiyomi Niwata (, born 10 December 1970 in Ushiku, Ibaraki Prefecture) is a professional triathlon, triathlete from Japan, triple Olympian (Sydney, Athens, Beijing), multiple-time National Champion (2004, 2005, 2006), and an Asian Aquathlon Champion and Oceanian Triathlon Champion of the year 2009. Kiyomi Niwata and Anja Dittmer are the only triathletes who took part in all three Olympic triathlons. In Sydney and in Athens, Niwata placed 14th, in Beijing, 9th. She is coached by Col Stewart. ITU Competitions In the 14 years from 1997 to 2010, Kiyomi Niwata took part in 99 ITU competitions and achieved 39 top ten positions. Erin Densham (born 3 May 1985 in Camden, New South Wales, Australia) is an Australian professional triathlete and bronze medallist in the 2012 Olympics. Julie Ertel (née Swail; born December 27, 1972) is an American water polo player who was the team captain of the US Women's National Team that captured the silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics. She competed in the triathlon at the 2008 Summer Olympics taking 19th place crossing the finish line in a time of 2:02:39.22, 4:11.56 behind the gold medalist. Lisa Nordén (born 24 November 1984, Kristianstad, Skåne, Sweden) is a professional Swedish triathlete, 2012 Olympic silver medalist, and 2008 and 2016 Olympian. Sam Bradley (Birth name#Maiden and married names, née Warriner; born 1 August 1971) is a retired Triathlon, triathlete who represented New Zealand in triathlons ranging from sprint distance up to the Ironman Triathlon, Ironman. Katherine Jessie Jean "Kate" Allen (born 25 April 1970, in Geelong, Australia) is an Australian-Austrian triathlete. She won the gold medal in the women's triathlon at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. Early life Kate Allen grew up on a sheep-farming property with her three brothers at Teesdale, Victoria in southeastern Australia. From an early age her parents encouraged her to run, and she used to frequently jog to primary school some 3 kilometres from home. At the age of four Allen began participating in Little Athletics at Landy Field in Geelong. She competed in junior athletics until the age of 14, winning a number of championships over 1500 m and 'cross-country' distance. Magali Messmer
Magali Di Marco Messmer (born 9 September 1971 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland), is one of the most seasoned professional elite triathletes and part of the Swiss National Team since 1995. She took part in two Olympic Games, placing 3rd in Sydney (2000) and 13th in Beijing (2008). She lives in Troistorrents in Valais.
