Tramway à Vapeur D'Ardres à Pont D'Ardres
The Ardres–Pont-d'Ardres steam tram (, , TvAPA) was a tramway that ran between Ardres and Pont-d'Ardres, Pas-de-Calais, France. It opened in 1902 and closed in 1955. History In 1899, Messrs Say's desired that their ''sucrerie'' (sugar refinery) at Pont-d'Ardres was connected by rail to the Chemin de fer d'Anvin à Calais (CF AC) at Ardres. The benefit of a rail line would be a reduction in travel time for their workers. It took them an hour and a half to travel by road between Ardres and Pont-d'Ardres. They worked twelve-hour shifts, with changeover at 07:00 and 19:00. Sugar beet was having to be transported via Calais, and was being damaged in transshipment. The line was promoted by Messrs Darras, with Say's providing 99% of the capital to build the line. In June 1901, the line was declared to be ''dutilité publique'' (in the public interest). Ardres
Ardres (; ; ) is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in northern France. Geography Ardres is located 10.1 mi by rail (station is at Pont-d'Ardres, a few kilometers from Ardres) S.S.E. of Calais, with which it is also connected by a canal (with limited turning space). It is one of three towns that make up ''Les Trois Pays'', or "Three Countries", the other two being Guînes and Licques. History Ardes was located next to the Pale of Calais, held by the English from 1346 to 1558, and as a result was an important trading and military post. The 1520 meeting between Henry VIII of England and Francis I of France known as the Field of the Cloth of Gold was held just over the border at the English-controlled town of Balinghem. The town has been an important market for cattle. In June 1546, it was the location of the Treaty of Ardres, an agreement between Henry and Francis that ended the 1542-1546 Anglo-French War. Autorail
The French word Autorail describes a single powered railcar capable of carrying passengers. While the concept faded for a while, it has been introduced with a new range of vehicles for both standard and metre gauge lines. Many autorails from the 1950s and 1960s form the basic transport of many French preserved railways, of Chemin de Fer Touristique (sometimes Historique). They can be used at times of year when steam locomotives might cause fires. They have quick availability and do not require the specialized infrastructure needs of steam locomotives. Many lines have both steam and diesel traction, but steam is often reserved for peak periods and weekends. The power of these machines allows them to pull a small number of trailers if passenger loads necessitate. Canal De Calais
The Canal de Calais () connects the Aa River near Ruminghem to the inner basins of the Port of Calais. Many boats enter the French canal system through the port of Calais and this canal. It is 30 km long and has 3 locks. History Work started on the canal in the late 17th century, but it was not opened until 1758. The canal was enlarged for Class II 'Campinois' and ‘Canal du Nord’ craft in the 1980s over two thirds of its length. The upgrading remains incomplete.
