This page documents the tornadoes and tornado outbreaks of 2012. Extremely destructive tornadoes form most frequently in the United States, Bangladesh, Brazil and eastern India, but they can occur almost anywhere under the right conditions. Tornadoes also appear regularly in neighboring southern Canada during the Northern Hemisphere's summer season, and somewhat regularly in Europe, Asia, Argentina, and Australia. There were 939 tornadoes confirmed in the U.S. in 2012. Worldwide, 91 fatalities have been confirmed: 69 in the United States, six in Turkey, five each in China and Indonesia, three in New Zealand and one each in Italy, Japan and Poland. 2012 Southern Indiana Tornado
In the afternoon hours of March 2, 2012, a deadly and destructive tornado moved through several communities in the states of Indiana and Kentucky, killing at least 11 people. The tornado was part of a larger severe weather outbreak in March 2012; the tornado was the single deadliest of the outbreak. The tornado devastated the towns of New Pekin, Indiana, New Pekin, Marysville, Indiana, Marysville and Henryville, Indiana, leaving damages totaling in excess of $58 million (2012 USD) in its wake. The National Weather Service determined that the tornado had peak wind speeds of , garnering it an EF4 rating on the Enhanced Fujita scale. Tornado Outbreak Of April 13–16, 2012
From April 13 to 16, 2012, a major tornado outbreak occurred across a large portion of the Great Plains. The storms resulted in six tornado-related fatalities, all of which occurred as a result of a nighttime EF3 tornado that caused major damage in and around Woodward, Oklahoma. Numerous other tornadoes occurred, including a violent EF4 tornado that passed near Marquette, Kansas, and an EF3 tornado that caused major damage in Wichita. Tornado Outbreak Sequence Of March 18–24, 2012
The Tornado outbreak sequence of March 18–24, 2012 was a long lasting tornado outbreak that occurred due to a slow moving, but powerful trough and cutoff low. The outbreak began in the Great Plains, where, over a two-day period, several tornadoes touched down, some of which were significant. The North Platte area was damaged by an EF3 that was produced by a supercell that spawned many tornadoes throughout its lifespan. The tornadic activity then shifted the Southern United States over subsequent days, particularly in Louisiana and Mississippi. These states were struck by a series of tornadoes for 3 days, most of which were relatively weak on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. However, a few reached EF2 intensity and caused considerable damage. Tornado Outbreak Of March 2–3, 2012
On March 2 and 3, 2012, a large and deadly tornado outbreak occurred over a large section of the Southern United States into the Ohio Valley region. The storms resulted in 41 tornado-related fatalities, 22 of which occurred in Kentucky. Tornado-related deaths also occurred in Alabama, Indiana, and Ohio. The outbreak was the second deadliest in early March for the U.S. since official records began in 1950; only the 1966 Candlestick Park tornado had a higher death toll for a tornadic system in early March. 2012 Leap Day Tornado Outbreak
The 2012 Leap Day tornado outbreak was a significant and deadly tornado outbreak that started on February 28 and ended on February 29, 2012. It is so called because the second day was a leap day. It caused severe damage in several regions, especially the Great Plains and Ohio Valley regions. It also resulted in several tornadoes in the Central Plains, a rarity for the time of year. In January and February 2012, the local weather forecast offices of the National Weather Service confirmed 134 tornadoes in the United States, indicating an above-average period of tornadic activity. On average, 64 tornadoes occur in the first two months of the year, with 35 occurring in January and 29 in February. However, in 2012, the count for the two months was 79 and 55, respectively. Hurricane Isaac was a deadly and destructive tropical cyclone that landfall (meteorology), came ashore in the U.S. state of Louisiana during August 2012. The ninth tropical cyclone naming, named storm and fourth hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, annual hurricane season, Isaac originated from a tropical wave that moved off the west coast of Africa on August 16. Tropical Storm Debby (2012)
Tropical Storm Debby was a tropical cyclone that caused extensive flooding in North Florida and Central Florida during late June 2012. The fourth tropical cyclone and Tropical cyclone naming, named storm of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, Debby developed from a Trough (meteorology), trough of low pressure in the central Gulf of Mexico on June 23. At the time, Debby was the earliest fourth named storm to form within the Atlantic basin on record. Despite a projected track toward landfall in Louisiana or Texas, the storm headed the opposite direction, moving slowly north-northeast and northeastward. Diehlstadt, Missouri
Diehlstadt is a village in Scott County, Missouri, United States. The population was 161 at the 2010 census. Diehlstadt was founded by John Kirkpatrick. History Diehlstadt was platted in 1868. The original plat of Dielstadt filed on June 15, 1870, consisted of 40 acres. The community of Diehlstadt was founded by Tennessee-born John Kirkpatrick (1829-1903) who was one of the community's first merchants and served as Diehlstadt's postmaster between May 11, 1876, and July 30, 1890. The community was named after one H. J. Deal (also spelled Diehl), a German merchant, with the German-language suffix "stadt" meaning ''town''. A post office called Diehlstadt was established in 1870, and remained in operation until 1977. Geography The village is in southeast Scott County, approximately six miles southeast of the Mississippi River and nine miles northeast of Sikeston.
