Tornado Outbreak Of May 22–27, 2008
A multi-day tornado outbreak affected the Midwestern United States, central plains of the United States from May 22–27, 2008. It was also one of the largest continuous tornado outbreaks on record. A total of 173 tornadoes were confirmed, with the most intense activity occurring across the Great Plains. One person was killed when a large wedge tornado struck Windsor, Colorado, and two more deaths were reported in Pratt County, Kansas. One person was also killed near Hugo, Minnesota on May 25 and nine were killed by an 2008 Parkersburg–New Hartford tornado, EF5 tornado that destroyed most of Parkersburg, Iowa and a small subdivision of New Hartford, Iowa (located near Waterloo, Iowa). Another fatality, caused by lightning related to the storms, occurred in central Kansas. The tornado outbreak of May 22–27, 2008 affected much of the central United States and parts of Canada. A total of 173 tornadoes touched down as a result of the outbreak. Several large and destructive tornadoes occurred, including in Windsor, Colorado, Quinter, Kansas, Hugo, Minnesota and Parkersburg, Iowa. The Parkersburg tornado was rated an List of EF5 tornadoes, EF5 on the Enhanced Fujita scale with winds of 205 mph. Nine people were killed in Iowa, two in Kansas and one in each Minnesota and Colorado. In meteorology, a low-pressure area (LPA), low area or low is a region where the atmospheric pressure is lower than that of surrounding locations. It is the opposite of a high-pressure area. Low-pressure areas are commonly associated with inclement weather (such as cloudy, windy, with possible rain or storms), while high-pressure areas are associated with lighter winds and clear skies. Quinter, Kansas
Quinter is a city in Gove County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, its population was 929. History The city of Quinter is built at the location of an old railroad switching site called Melota. A community named Familton' was built there in 1885, consisting originally of a hotel. The U.S. government would not establish a post office under the Familton name, because of possible confusion with other names in the state, so another had to be chosen. Interstate 80 (I-80) is a part of the Interstate Highway System that runs from San Francisco, California, to Teaneck, New Jersey. In Wyoming, the Interstate Highway runs from the Utah state line near Evanston east to the Nebraska state line in Pine Bluffs. Greensburg, Kansas
Greensburg is a city in and the county seat of Kiowa County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 United States census, the population of the city was 740. It is home to the world's largest hand-dug well. On the evening of May 4, 2007, Greensburg was devastated by an EF5 tornado that obliterated at least 95 percent of the city, killing eleven people between the ages of 46 and 84. 2007 Greensburg Tornado
In the evening hours of Friday, May 4, 2007, amid a tornado outbreak across the central United States, a devastating EF5tornado moved through Kiowa County, Kansas, heavily damaging the town of Greensburg. The tornado, commonly known as the Greensburg tornado, tracked through the area, killing 12 people and injuring 63 others. The tornado was the first to be rated EF5on the Enhanced Fujita scale after the retirement of the original Fujita scale in the United States on February 1, 2007. The tornado touched down in northern Comanche County, moving to the north while continuously widening. The tornado eventually entered Kiowa County, crossing U.S. Route 183before reaching a peak width of to the south of Greensburg before entering the city.
