George Tooker
George Clair Tooker, Jr. (August 5, 1920 – March 27, 2011) was an American figurative painter. His works are associated with Magic realism, Social realism, Photorealism, and Surrealism. His subjects are depicted naturally as in a photograph, but the images use flat tones, an ambiguous perspective, and alarming juxtapositions to suggest an imagined or dreamed reality. He did not agree with the association of his work with Magic realism or Surrealism, as he said, "I am after painting reality impressed on the mind so hard that it returns as a dream, but I am not after painting dreams as such, or fantasy." In 1968, he was elected to the National Academy of Design and was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Tooker was one of nine recipients of the National Medal of Arts in 2007. Ernest Sidney Tooker
Lieutenant Norman Cooper (October 2, 1888 – December 1, 1960) was an American flying ace of the First World War, being accredited with six aerial victories. His real name was Ernest Sidney Tooker. Biography Tooker was born in Gloversville, New York, he enlisted in Canada in 1916 under the alias Norman Cooper under the pretense of being a Canadian citizen. He initially served as a private in the 3d Canadian Division Supply Column from June 1916 until August 1917 when he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in August 1917. Deployed to France, he flew Sopwith Camels with 73 Squadron RAF in the summer of 1918. In combat he was awarded the British Distinguished Flying Cross. Gazetted on 8 February 1919 for his actions during 1918, taking part in many low level bombing and strafing attacks. In air combat he attained six victories. Gabriel Mead Tooker
Gabriel Mead Tooker (December 12, 1839 – December 11, 1905) was an American lawyer and clubman who was prominent in New York Society during the Gilded Age. He was a member of Mrs. Astor's list named the "Four Hundred". Early life Tooker was born on December 12, 1839, in New York City. He was the third of seven children born to John F. Tooker (1807–1849) and Mary A. (née Mead) Tooker (b. 1811), who married in 1835. His maternal grandfather was William Mead of Greenwich, Connecticut, and his brother-in-law was Col. Clermont Livingston Best. He was the uncle of Annie Livingston Tooker Best, wife of Elizur Yale Smith of the Yale family, and were prominent in New York and Newport society. Her husband was the son of Wellington Smith, one of the world's largest paper manufacturer at the time, and was proprietor of a horsing estate that was later sold to William Douglas Sloane. Giles Tooker
Giles Tooker (c 1565 – 25 November 1623) was an English lawyer and politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1601 and 1614. Tooker was the son of Charles Tooker, yeoman of Maddingley and his wife Matilda Nipperhead. His father died in 1571 when he was six leaving him well endowed financially. He was educated at Barnard's Inn and entered Lincoln's Inn in 1581. In 1589, he was called to the bar. He was a member of counsel to Salisbury in 1591. In 1601, Tooker was elected Member of Parliament for Salisbury. He was re-elected MP for Salisbury in 1604. William Tooker
William Tooker (or Tucker) (Exeter, 1557 or 1558 – 19 March 1621) was an English churchman and theological writer, who was archdeacon of Barnstaple and later dean of Lichfield. Life Born at Exeter in 1557 or 1558, he was the third son of William Tooker of that town by his wife Honora, daughter of James Erisey of Erisey in Cornwall. He was admitted to Winchester College in 1572, and became a scholar at New College, Oxford, in 1575, graduating B.A. on 16 Oct. 1579 and M.A. on 1 June 1583, and proceeding B.D. and D.D. on 4 July 1594. In 1577 he was elected to a perpetual fellowship, and in 1580 was appointed a canon of Exeter. In 1584 he was presented to the rectory of Kilkhampton in Cornwall, and in the following year resigned his fellowship on being collated archdeacon of Barnstaple on 24 April.
