"To Be a Lover" is a song written by William Bell and Booker T. Jones, and originally performed by Bell as a soul ballad titled "I Forgot to Be Your Lover". William Bell (singer)
William Bell ( ''né'' Yarbrough; born July 16, 1939) is an American soul singer and songwriter. As a performer, he is best known for his debut single, 1961's " You Don't Miss Your Water"; 1968's top 10 hit in the UK " Private Number", a duet with Judy Clay; and his only US top 40 hit, 1976's " Tryin' to Love Two", which also hit No. 1 on the R&B chart. Upon the death of Otis Redding, Bell released the well-received memorial song "A Tribute to a King". Al Kooper (born Alan Peter Kuperschmidt; February 5, 1944) is an American songwriter, record producer, and musician. Throughout much of the 1960s and 1970s he was a prolific studio musician, including playing organ on the Bob Dylan song " Like a Rolling Stone", French horn and piano on the Rolling Stones song " You Can't Always Get What You Want", and lead guitar on Rita Coolidge's " The Lady's Not for Sale". He also formed and named Blood, Sweat & Tears, though he did not stay with the group long enough to share in its subsequent popularity.
