The 1940 United States census, conducted by the United States Census Bureau, Census Bureau, determined the resident population of the United States to be 132,164,569, an increase of 7.6 percent over the 1930 United States Census, 1930 population of 122,775,046 people. The census date of record was April 1, 1940. A number of new questions were asked including where people were five years before, highest educational grade achieved, and information about wages. This census introduced sampling techniques; one in 20 people were asked additional questions on the census form. Other innovations included a field test of the census in 1939. The Mint Museum, also referred to as The Mint Museums, is a cultural institution comprising two museums, located in Charlotte, North Carolina. Hotel Charlotte (Charlotte, North Carolina)
Hotel Charlotte was a 13-story hotel in Charlotte, North Carolina, which opened in 1929. It was on the corner of Trade Street and Poplar Street in the Uptown area of Charlotte. While primarily known by the name "Hotel Charlotte", it also operated under the names "Queen Charlotte Hotel", "White House Inn" and "White House Hotel". It closed on December 31, 1973. It was designed by William Lee Stoddart and was a steel-frame building sheathed with sections of gray granite and buff-colored brick. It housed 250 guest rooms. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 2, 1979. In the years following its closure, attempts were made to find developers who could rehabilitate and preserve the structure.
