Fort Tilden, also known as Fort Tilden Historic District, is a former United States Army installation on the coast in the New York City borough of Queens. Fort Tilden now forms part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, and is administered by the National Park Service. Fort Tilden Historic District is located on the Rockaway Peninsula, between Jacob Riis Park to the east and Breezy Point Tip to the west. All three of these sites are operated by the National Park Service. Since its decommissioning, the former installation has largely become a natural area of beaches, dunes and maritime forest. Most of the old military installations are abandoned, and military structures which formerly housed artillery (batteries) and ammunition (magazines) are covered in graffiti. The Madison County portion of Tilden is part of the Norfolk Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Tilden was originally called "Burnett", under which name it was laid out by the railroad in 1880. It was incorporated as Burnett in 1885, but the U.S. Post Office officially changed the name of the village in 1887, after presidential candidate Samuel J. Tilden is an unincorporated community, census-designated place (CDP), and the county seat of McMullen County, Texas, United States. The population was 190 at the 2020 census. Tilden lies at the intersection of State Highways 16 and 72 in the north central part of the county. It is located roughly an hour south of San Antonio. History During the Civil War, a Home Guard post named Camp Rio Frio was built to protect the community from Apaches and bandits. After the war, the community was called Dog Town and was reputed to be a lawless and bandit-filled place. The first establishment was the Franklin Ranch in 1868, built by Ralph S. Franklin. Now the Lone Star Camp, it is a hunting and working ranch camp still owned by the Franklin Family. In 1871, the community was granted a post office. The town's name was changed in honor of Samuel J. Charles Lee Tilden Regional Park, also known as Tilden Park or Tilden, [], is a regional park in the East Bay (San Francisco Bay Area), East Bay, part of the San Francisco Bay Area in California. It is between the Berkeley Hills and San Pablo Ridge. Its main entrance is near Kensington, Berkeley, and Richmond. The park is contiguous with Wildcat Canyon Regional Park. The park is managed by the East Bay Regional Park District, created from the first land the District purchased in 1936.
