Salgótarján
Salgótarján (; , German: ''Schalgau'') is a city with county rights in Hungary, the capital of Nógrád County, north-eastern Hungary, making it the third least populous county capital. The nearby Salgó Castle is a well-known tourist attraction. Location At the foot of Karancs mountain, in the Cserhát hills, 250 meters above sea level, north-east from Budapest, west from Miskolc. Salgótarján is surrounded by beautiful forests and hills topped with castle ruins, which are accessible by bus that may be taken from the center of town. The word ''salgó'' means "shining" in Old Hungarian, while ''Tarján'' was the name of one of the Hungarian tribes conquering the area. The castle of Salgó was built in the 13th century on a mountain of volcanic origin. In the 13th century the town already had a church. After the 1682 siege of the nearby Ca ...

Hungarians (film)
''Hungarians'' () is a 1978 Hungarian drama film directed by Zoltán Fábri. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 51st Academy Awards. Plot Winter of 1942/1943. Within the Csarda, a group of farmworkers convene, discussing the most advantageous course of action—to seek employment in Germany, primarily to avoid conscription, where they believe they can earn more. Their presence on the estate is met with acceptance; the manager is Hungarian, whose family barely escaped to the USA. Situated in a remote area, the estate's owner is elderly and ailing, with his sole son serving as a soldier. Nearby, a prisoner of war camp houses French detainees, whom they are strictly forbidden to approach. Spring arrives, and the farm work intensifies. Shielded from the war's realities by their isolation, their naiveté is shattered by the sudden disappearance of the estate's coachman, the execution of exhausted Soviet prisoners, and the forced habitation of ...

Red Psalm
''Red Psalm'' () is a 1972 Hungarian film by Miklós Jancsó. The literal translation of the title is "''And the People Still Ask''", a quote from a poem by Sándor Petőfi. Plot ''Red Psalm'' centers around a small peasants' revolt in 1890. It draws inspiration from the Hungarian revolutionary movements of the 19th century, including the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, of which Sándor Petőfi, the poet whose work the film's Hungarian title references, was a participant. Background Like most of Jancsó's best-known works, ''Red Psalm'' is loosely based on events from Hungarian history. Shot in very long, carefully choreographed takes, the film features only 26 shots. Unlike Jancsó's previous films, which used music only sparsely, almost every scene in ''Red Psalm'' features music, usually performed by the on-screen characters. The songs include Hungarian folk music and songs in Russian and English, most famously "Charlie Is My Darling" (a variation on a Scots song later adopted ...

The Red And The White (film)
''The Red and the White'' () is a 1967 drama film directed by Miklós Jancsó and dealing with the Russian Civil War. The original Hungarian title, ''Csillagosok, katonák'', can be translated as "Stars on their Caps" (literally "Stars, soldiers"), which, as with a number of Jancsó film titles, is a quote from a song. The film was listed to compete at the 1968 Cannes Film Festival, but the festival was canceled due to the events of May 1968 in France. It was voted as "Best Foreign Film of 1969" by the French Syndicate of Cinema Critics. The film, a Soviet-Hungarian co-production, was originally commissioned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution in Russia in which the Bolsheviks seized power. However, Jancsó chose to set the action two years later in 1919 and showed Hungarian irregulars supporting the Communist " Reds" in fighting the Tsarist "Whites" as the two sides battled for control in the hills overlooking the Volga river. As well as deviating on th ...
