Thorn Electrical Industries Limited was a British electrical engineering company. It was listed on the London Stock Exchange, but merged with EMI Group to form Thorn EMI in 1979. It was de-merged in 1996 and became a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index, but was acquired by the Japanese Nomura Group only two years later. It is now owned by Terra Firma Capital Partners. History Sir Jules Thorn founded the company with his business partner Alfred Deutsch in March 1928 as The Electric Lamp Service Company Ltd. Thorn had worked in England as a travelling salesman for company Olso, an Austrian manufacturer of gas mantles. When Olso went bankrupt, Thorn decided to stay in England. Deutsch, an Austrian engineer, visited Thorn in 1928 and was persuaded to stay to help organize the company's production process. History An online retail site trading as Big Brown Box was launched by Thorn Group Limited (owners of brands including Radio Rentals and Rentlo) in November 2008. Caversham Finance Limited, trading as BrightHouse, was the largest rent-to-own company in the United Kingdom, with 240 stores. It was a national chain that provided home electronics, domestic appliances, household furniture, other related products on a hire purchase agreements. Cash loans were offered towards the end of the company's existence. Caversham Finance Limited was owned by private equity firm Apollo Management. Rumbelows was an electrical and electronics retailer in the United Kingdom that once rivalled Currys, Dixons and Comet. History The company was established in 1949 by Sydney Rumbelow when he opened his first shop in Hatfield, Hertfordshire. The chain was extended to more shops throughout the 1950s, before being acquired by Thorn Electrical Industries in the early 1960s. In 1969, Thorn extended the Rumbelows name across other regional chains it had bought, including Fred Dawes, NEMS and Strothers. In 1975, J & F Stone was purchased from Great Universal Stores and added to the chain. Centralised control was established from the Nantwich, Cheshire, headquarters.
