Thomas Manning (sinologist)
Thomas Manning (8 November 1772 – 1840) is considered the first lay Chinese studies scholar in Europe and was the first Englishman to enter Lhasa, the holy city of Tibet. Early life Manning was born in Broome, Norfolk. After leaving school, he entered Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge to study mathematics where he became a friend of future writer and essayist Charles Lamb and was expected to achieve Wrangler (University of Cambridge), Second Wrangler. However, his eccentricity and a "strong repugnance to oaths" meant that he left before graduation. Long devoted to Chinese studies, he studied medicine and Chinese at Paris from 1800 to 1803. Thomas Courtland Manning (September 14, 1825 Edenton, North Carolina – October 11, 1887, New York City) was an American jurist and diplomat. Manning's ancestors came from England to Virginia in the 17th century. He was graduated at the University of North Carolina, admitted to the bar, and practiced for a time in his native town. Removing in 1855 to Alexandria, Louisiana, he took up his permanent residence there and built up a large practice. He was sent to the Secession convention of 1861 as a state-rights Democrat, and when the convention adjourned was elected a lieutenant in a Louisiana Confederate regiment, he served with the rank of lieutenant-colonel on the staff of Governor Moore, and in 1863 was appointed adjutant-general of the state, with the rank of brigadier-general. In 1864 he was appointed an associate justice of the Supreme Court of Louisiana, and served until the close of the civil war. Thomas Henry Manning, OC (22 December 1911 – 8 November 1998) was a British-Canadian Arctic explorer, biologist, geographer, zoologist, and author. Appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada, Manning held the positions of vice-chairman and executive director of the Arctic Institute of North America. Nicknamed the ''Lone Wolf of the Arctic'', he was known for travelling alone with dog sled and canoe. Early years Manning, son of a well-to-do farmer and a well-known cricketer, was born 22 December 1911 in Dallington, Northampton, England. He was educated at Harrow School and Cambridge University. Thomas William Manning (June 28, 1946 – July 29, 2019) was an American Marxist militant convicted of killing New Jersey State Police trooper Philip J. Lamonaco during a traffic stop in 1981. Before the murder he co-founded a small revolutionary Marxist group known as the United Freedom Front (UFF), which bombed a series of US military and commercial institutions and committed bank robberies in the 1970s and early 1980s. He remained a fugitive for three years after killing the state trooper, despite being the subject of a large manhunt including appearing on the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. He remained active in UFF bombings and bank robberies until the arrest of all five remaining other UFF members on November 4, 1984, which was followed by the arrest of Manning and his wife on April 24, 1985.
