The original soundtrack to the 1939 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer motion picture ''The Wizard of Oz'' was first released in 1956 on MGM Records. Background The soundtrack album was issued in 1956 to coincide with the TV premiere of the movie due on November 3. Until then, the songs were available for purchase in a different recording, made in July 1939 for the Decca label. The Decca album (catalog number 74) featured vocals only by Judy Garland and the Ken Darby Singers, none of the other movie cast members participated. According to ''Billboard'', editing a soundtrack album was a complex challenge before the advent of stereophonic sound, as dialogue, music, and sound effects were all recorded on the same track. MGM Records
MGM Records was a record label founded by the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film studio in 1946 for the purpose of releasing soundtrack recordings (later LP albums) of their musical films. It transitioned into a pop music label that continued into the 1970s. The company also released soundtrack albums of the music for some of their non-musical films as well, and on rare occasions, cast albums of off-Broadway musicals such as ''The Fantasticks'' and the 1954 revival of ''The Threepenny Opera''. Harold Arlen
Harold Arlen (born Hyman Arluck; February 15, 1905 – April 23, 1986) was an American composer of popular music, who composed over 500 songs, a number of which have become known worldwide. In addition to composing the songs for the 1939 film ''The Wizard of Oz'' (lyrics by Yip Harburg), including "Over the Rainbow", which won him the Oscar for Academy Award for Best Original Song, Best Original Song, he was nominated as composer for 8 other Oscar awards. Arlen is a highly regarded contributor to the Great American Songbook. : The songs from the 1939 musical fantasy film ''The Wizard of Oz (1939 film), The Wizard of Oz'' have taken their place among the most famous and instantly recognizable American songs of all time, and the film's principal song, "Over the Rainbow", is perhaps the most famous song ever written for a film. The Merry Old Land Of Oz
"The Merry Old Land of Oz" is a song from the 1939 film ''The Wizard of Oz'' and the musical. The song is sung by the townspeople of the Emerald City, who are joined at appropriate times by the group of four travelers: Dorothy (with Toto), Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion. It was written by lyricist E.Y. Harburg and composer Harold Arlen. The verse of the song suggests that the people of the city do no actual work, since they "get up at twelve, and start to work at one, take an hour for lunch, and then at two heyre done". Their actions contradict that funny sentiment, however, as they are clearly doing plenty of work to "freshen up" the group of four to go see the Wizard. Herbert Pope Stothart (September 11, 1885February 1, 1949) was an American songwriter, arranger, conductor, and composer. He was nominated for twelve Academy Awards and won Best Original Score for '' The Wizard of Oz''. "If I Were King of the Forest" is a song from the 1939 film ''The Wizard of Oz'', with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. Harburg. "Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead" is a song in the 1939 film ''The Wizard of Oz''.
