''The Valley of the Creuse, Sunset'' is a 1889 oil painting by the French artist Claude Monet, today in the collection of the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar, Alsace (inventory number 88.RP.371). It depicts the river Creuse at sunset Sunset, also known as sundown, is the daily disappearance of the Sun below the horizon due to Earth's rotation. As viewed from everywhere on Earth (except the North and South poles), the equinox Sun sets due west at the moment of both the spring ... in a landscape near Fresselines, where the poet Maurice Rollinat had a house in which Monet was a guest from March to May 1889. During that time, Monet painted fourteen views of the site where the Petite Creuse flows into the Grande Creuse, including the Colmar painting. They were all shown together in an exhibition in Paris in June 1889. Oscar-Claude Monet (, , ; 14 November 1840 – 5 December 1926) was a French painter and founder of impressionist painting who is seen as a key precursor to modernism, especially in his attempts to paint nature as he perceived it. Wildenstein & Company, a private art dealership, was founded in Paris by Nathan Wildenstein in the mid-19th century and run by his family ever since. The Wildenstein Institute, established by Nathan's son Georges, maintains one of the largest art history reference libraries in the world. Maurice Rollinat
Maurice Rollinat (December 29, 1846 in Châteauroux, Indre – October 26, 1903 in Ivry-sur-Seine) was a French poet and musician. Early works His father represented Indre in the National Assembly of 1848, and was a friend of George Sand, whose influence is very marked in young Rollinat's first volume, ''Dans les brandes'' (1877), and to whom it was dedicated. Brief fame After its publication, he abandoned realism and worked in a very different manner. He joined a literary circle that called themselves '' Les Hydropathes'', founded by Émile Goudeau, an anti-clerical group with ties to the decadent literary movement.
