The Student's Romance
''The Student's Romance'' is a 1935 British musical film directed by Otto Kanturek and starring Grete Natzler, Patric Knowles and Carol Goodner.Wood p.88 It was based on the musical ''I Lost My Heart in Heidelberg (musical), I Lost My Heart in Heidelberg'', and was part of a trend of operetta films of the mid-1930s. It was made by British International Pictures at Elstree Studios (Shenley Road), Elstree Studios. The film's sets were designed by the art directors Cedric Dawe and Clarence Elder. Otto Kanturek
Otto W. Kanturek (27 July 1897, Vienna – 26 June 1941, Cawston, Norfolk, Cawston, Norfolk) was an Austrian, later Czechoslovakia, Czechoslovak cameraman, cinematographer and film director. Life Having trained at the Graphischen Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt in Vienna and, after a voluntary internship for Gaumont Film Company, Gaumont Newsreels, he became an assistant film cameraman with them in 1912 and the following year received a post with producer Erich Pommer in Paris, filming newsreels for Pathé, Gaumont and Eclair (camera), Éclair. In 1914 he went to Milan to work for Milano-Film, then in 1915 to work with Sascha-Film in Vienna and with Alexander Korda in Budapest. During the First World War, he made his debut as chief cameraman and in 1916 he was conscripted and was seconded to the special photographic services in the military. Norma Varden Shackleton (20 January 1898 – 19 January 1989), known professionally as Norma Varden, was an English-American actress with a long film career. Life and career Early life Born in London, the daughter of a retired sea captain, Varden was a child prodigy. She trained as a concert pianist in Paris and performed in England before deciding to take up acting. Ivan Samson (28 August 1894 – 1 May 1963) was a British stage, film and television actor. Samson appeared regularly in West End plays and from 1920 began appearing in British silent films. Steven Geray (born István Gyergyai, 10 November 190426 December 1973) was a Hungarian-born American film actor who appeared in over 100 films and dozens of television programs. Geray appeared in numerous famed A-pictures, including Alfred Hitchcock's '' Spellbound'' (1945) and ''To Catch a Thief'' (1955), Joseph L. Cedric Dawe
Cedric Dawe (1906–1996) was a British art director. He worked on the set design of over sixty films during his career, spending many years working for Associated British Picture Corporation, ABPC at the company's Elstree Studios (Shenley Road), Elstree and Welwyn Studios. He was praised for his realistic designs for Lance Comfort's 1947 film noir ''Temptation Harbour''. Towards the end of his career he also worked in television, as art director on series such as ''Colonel March of Scotland Yard'', ''Department S (TV series), Department S'' and ''The Saint (TV series), The Saint''.
