''The Side Show of Life'' is a 1924 American silent drama film produced by Famous Players-Lasky, directed by Herbert Brenon and distributed by Paramount Pictures. The film is based on the 1920 novel ''The Mountebank'' by William J. Locke, which had been turned into a play by Ernest Denny. Cast Production Ernest Torrence stars in the role of a clown during World War I which is similar to that of Lon Chaney's in '' He Who Gets Slapped'', released that same year, and in '' Laugh, Clown, Laugh'', released four years later. Herbert Brenon (born Alexander Herbert Reginald St. John Brenon; 13 January 1880 – 21 June 1958) was an Irish-born U.S. film director, actor and screenwriter during the era of silent films through the 1930s. Brenon was among the early filmmakers who, before the rise of corporate film production, was a genuine “ auteur”, controlling virtually all creative and technical components in crafting his pictures. The quality of Brenon's artistic output rivaled that of film pioneers D. W. Griffith. Brenon was among the first directors to achieve celebrity status among moviegoers for his often spectacular cinematic inventions. Thalberg for MGM Pictures. The film was written by Elizabeth Meehan, based on the 1923 Broadway stage production ''Laugh, Clown, Laugh,'' by David Belasco and Tom Cushing, which in turn was based on a 1919 play ''Ridi, Pagliaccio'' by . The theme song "Laugh, Clown, Laugh" was composed by Ted Fiorito (music) and Lewis and Young (lyrics). Stills exist that show Chaney in his clown make-up. The sets were designed by Cedric Gibbons.
