The Railway Children (1970 Film)
''The Railway Children'' is a 1970 British family drama film based on the 1906 novel of the same name by E. Nesbit. The film was directed by Lionel Jeffries and stars Dinah Sheridan, Jenny Agutter (who had earlier featured in the BBC's 1968 dramatisation of the novel), Sally Thomsett, Gary Warren and Bernard Cribbins in leading roles. The film was released to cinemas in the United Kingdom on 21 December 1970. The film rights were bought by Jeffries. It was his directorial debut and he wrote the screenplay. ''The Railway Children'' was a critical success, both at time of release and in later years. Plot In 1905, the Waterbury family lives in a luxurious villa in the London suburbs. Lionel Jeffries
Lionel Charles Jeffries (10 June 1926 – 19 February 2010) was an English actor, director, and screenwriter. He appeared primarily in films and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, Golden Globe Award for his role in ''The Spy with a Cold Nose''. Early life Jeffries was born in Forest Hill, London, Forest Hill, south London. Both his parents were social workers with the Salvation Army. As a boy, he attended the Queen Elizabeth's School, Wimborne Minster, Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Wimborne Minster in Dorset. Sally James (presenter)
Sally James (born Sally Cann, 10 May 1950) is a British television presenter. She presented the ITV Saturday morning children's show ''Tiswas'' from 1977 until it ended in 1982. James's role on the show included conducting the "Almost Legendary Pop Interviews", interviewing musical acts including Elvis Costello, Sting, The Clash, Motörhead, Iron Maiden and Kate Bush, and serving as music editor. Erik Chitty
Erik Chitty (8 July 1907 – 22 July 1977) was an English stage, film and television actor. Early life Chitty was the son of a flour miller, Frederick Walter Chitty and his wife Ethel Elsie Assistance née Franklin; they married in 1902. He attended Dover College and Jesus College, Cambridge, where he was one of the founders of the Cambridge University Mummers, before training at RADA and becoming a professional actor. Brenda Rose Cowling (23 April 1925 – 2 October 2010) was an English actress from London. Biography Cowling wanted to be a film actress from the time she was a child; however, upon leaving school, she trained instead as a shorthand typist. David Lodge (actor)
David William Frederick Lodge (19 August 1921 – 18 October 2003) was an English actor. Career During the Second World War, Lodge served in the RAF. Before turning to acting he worked as a circus clown. He also appeared in Gang Shows and variety before making his screen debut in ''The Cockleshell Heroes'' and going on to feature in many British films usually portraying military types, and often comedic roles. Lodge was a close friend of Peter Sellers and appeared as part of Spike Milligan's team on his '' Q'' programmes (a running gag being that in each episode he or Spike would mention his role in ''The Cockleshell Heroes''). The fourth wall is a performance dramatic convention, convention in which an invisible, imaginary wall separates actors from the audience. While the audience can see through this "wall", the convention assumes the actors act as if they cannot. From the 16th century onward, the rise of illusionism in staging practices, which culminated in the realism (theatre), realism and naturalism (theatre), naturalism of the Nineteenth-century theatre, theatre of the 19th century, led to the development of the fourth wall concept. The metaphor suggests a relationship to the mise-en-scène behind a proscenium, proscenium arch.
