The Mambo Kings
''The Mambo Kings'' is a 1992 musical film, musical Drama (film and television), drama film based on the 1989 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, Pulitzer Prize-winning novel ''The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love'' by Oscar Hijuelos. The film was directed and produced by Arne Glimcher, and stars Armand Assante, Antonio Banderas, Cathy Moriarty and Maruschka Detmers. Set in the early 1950s, the story follows Cesar (Assante) and Nestor Castillo (Banderas), brothers and aspiring musicians who find success and stardom after fleeing from Havana, Cuba to New York City to escape danger. The film marks Glimcher's directing debut, and features Banderas in his first English-language role. Glimcher acquired the film rights one year before the novel was published and hired Cynthia Cidre to write the script. Arnold "Arne" Glimcher (born March 2, 1938) is an American art dealer, gallerist, film producer, and film director. He is the founder of Pace Gallery, which by 2011 sold more than $400 million in art annually. He is the father of Marc Glimcher, who succeeded him as chairman of Pace, and American scientist Paul Glimcher. From 2013 to 2017, Arne and Marc Glimcher were included each year in the ''ArtReview'' annual list of the 100 most influential people in contemporary art. "Beautiful Maria of my Soul" () is a song prominently featured in the 1992 motion picture ''The Mambo Kings''. In the film, it is performed in Spanish by Antonio Banderas and it also appears on the film's The Mambo Kings (soundtrack), soundtrack album in an English version by Los Lobos.
