''The Lord of the Rings'' is a stage musical with music by A. R. Rahman, Värttinä, and Christopher Nightingale, and lyrics and book by Shaun McKenna and Matthew Warchus, based on the novel of the same name by J. R. R. Tolkien. It is the most prominent of several theatre adaptations of the novel. Set in the world of Middle-earth, the musical tells the tale of a humble hobbit who is asked to play the hero and undertake a treacherous mission to destroy an evil, magic ring without being seduced by its power. The musical has been performed in four professional productions. It was first performed in 2006 at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto. The second production opened at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in London's West End in June 2007 where it played until July 2008. Värttinä
Värttinä (, meaning " spindle") is a Finnish folk music band that started as a project by Sari and Mari Kaasinen in 1983 in the village of Rääkkylä, in Karelia, the southeastern region of Finland. Many transformations have taken place in the band since then. Värttinä shot into fame with the release of their 1991 album '' Oi Dai''. As of 2009, the band consists of three lead female vocalists supported by three acoustic musicians. The vocalists sing in the Karelian dialect of the Finnish language. In August 2005, Värttinä recorded their tenth studio album called '' Miero'' at Finnvox Studios, Helsinki. It was released on 25 January 2006 in Finland, and 30 January 2006 worldwide. Quests In Middle-earth
J. R. R. Tolkien's best-known novels, ''The Hobbit'' and ''The Lord of the Rings'', both have the structure of quests, with a hero setting out, facing dangers, achieving a goal, and returning home. Where ''The Hobbit'' is a children's story with the simple goal of treasure, ''The Lord of the Rings'' is a more complex narrative with multiple quests. Its main quest, to destroy the One Ring, has been described as a reversed quest – starting with a much-desired treasure, and getting rid of it. That quest, too, is balanced against a moral quest, to scour the Shire and return it to its original state. Tolkien superimposed multiple meanings on the basic quest, for example embedding a hidden Christian message in the story, and marking the protagonists Frodo and Aragorn out as heroes by giving them magic swords in the epic tradition of Sigurd and Arthur. Cohl now runs S2BN Entertainment, with offices in New York and Toronto. David Mirvish
David Mirvish, (born August 29, 1944) is a Canadian theatre producer, impresario, and art collector. He owns and operates Toronto-based theatrical production company Mirvish Productions, which he founded with his father in 1986. He has also produced and presented several productions on Broadway and in London's West End. Mirvish is also a prominent art collector, having amassed a large collection of Canadian and international works, including from renowned artists Frank Stella and Jules Olitski. Saul Zaentz (; February 28, 1921January 3, 2014) was an American film producer and record company executive. He won the Academy Award for Best Picture three times and, in 1996, was awarded the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award. Zaentz's film production career, primarily financed by the profits from Creedence Clearwater Revival, was marked by a dedication to the adaptation of novels. Theatre Royal, Plymouth, is a theatre venue in Plymouth, Devon. Watermill Theatre
The Watermill Theatre is a producing theatre in Bagnor, Berkshire. It opened in 1967 in Bagnor Mill, a converted watermill on the River Lambourn. As a producing house, the theatre has staged works that have subsequently moved on to the West End, including the 2004 revival of '' Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street'', which also transferred to Broadway in 2006.
