Courier
A courier is a person or organization that delivers a message, package or letter from one place or person to another place or person. Typically, a courier provides their courier service on a commercial contract basis; however, some couriers are government or state agency employees (for example: a diplomatic courier). Duties and functions Couriers are distinguished from ordinary mail services by features such as speed, security, tracking, signature, specialization and individualization of express services, and swift delivery times, which are optional for most everyday mail services. As a premium service, couriers are usually more expensive than standard mail services, and their use is normally limited to packages where one or more of these features are considered important enough to warrant the cost. ''The News Courier'' is a daily newspaper published in Athens, Alabama, covering Limestone County, Alabama. It is owned by Carpenter Media Group. History Today's ''News Courier'' was created in 1969, when ''The Alabama Courier'' (founded 1892) and the ''Limestone Democrat'' (founded 1891) were acquired by Robert Bryan and merged. The combined paper was known in the 1980s as ''The Athens LC News Courier''. Bryan sold his papers to Hollinger in 1997. ''The Courier'' was, prior to its demise in 2005, the oldest game magazine in existence. History Started in 1968 by war-gaming enthusiasts Dick Bryant and Bob Beattie as a newsletter of the New England Wargamers Association, ''The Courier'' underwent a glossy reboot starting in 1979. Dubbed "America's Foremost Miniatures Wargaming Magazine", ''The Courier'' featured regular columns and articles on how to collect, assemble, paint, play with, and make historically accurate miniatures. In 2005, publisher Legio X issued ''The Courier'' #91, the last issue of the magazine. Its content became part of Historical Miniature Gamer Magazine. The ''Oxford Journal'' was a free newspaper distributed throughout the city of Oxford in the county of Oxfordshire, UK. It was published under licence by Taylor Newspapers Ltd (who also publish other free newspapers including the ''Basingstoke Observer'', ''Oxford Property Weekly'' and ''Auto Weekly''). Early history The paper was launched in January 1973 from an old toy factory in Cowley by Tony Rosser. The ''Courier'' was a magazine published in Britain from 1938 to 1951 by Norman Kark Publications. It was printed mainly on art paper and continued to be produced throughout World War II, in spite of the paper restrictions imposed. Each issue included approximately 180 pages, 7½ inches wide by 7 inches deep: at the time, Britain's daily newspapers were rationed to only four pages. There were usually four issues a year (although there were some issues that were missed). The price was three shillings, A Penguin pocket book only cost six pence in 1940 (one sixth of the price). The sub-title was "Picturing Today". Each copy had a large number of Satire articles, one or more shaggy dog story was always included. In addition there was a section of art photographs, including chaste "nude studies" of women, countryside and seascape photographs. The ''Vancouver Courier'' was a Canadian semi-weekly local newspaper published in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, by the Van-Net chain owned by Glacier Media Group. In 2007, it was Canada's largest distributed community newspaper, with a weekly distribution of 265,000. The circulation estimate included the ''Vancouver Courier'', the ''Vancouver Courier Downtown'', and the ''Vancouver Courier Westside'', along with the ''Vancouver Courier Eastside'' on Wednesdays. Delivered to homes, the paper is distributed from UBC to the Vancouver proper boundary at Boundary Road. The newspaper began as an independent in 1908 as the ''Eburne News''.
