"The 'In' Crowd" is a 1964 song written by Billy Page and arranged by his brother Gene and originally performed by Dobie Gray on his album ''Dobie Gray Sings for "In" Crowders That Go "Go-Go"''. It appeared on an episode of '' Dick Clark's Rock, Roll & Remember'', featuring in the last week of November 1964, the month Gray's rendition was released. Chart performance In the US, Gray's version reached number 11 on the Hot Rhythm & Blues Singles chart and number 13 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 on 20 February 1965. Outside the US, "The 'In' Crowd" went to number 25 on the UK Singles Chart and number 8 in Canada. Gray's Shindig! performance of the song aired on 10 March 1965. Dobie Gray (born Lawrence Darrow Brown; July 26, 1940 – December 6, 2011) was an American singer and songwriter. Gray's music spanned multiple genres, including soul, country, pop, and musical theater. His hit songs included " The 'In' Crowd" in 1965 and " Drift Away" (a cover of a song written by Mentor Williams). "Drift Away" was one of the biggest hits of 1973, has sold over one million copies, and remains a staple of radio airplay. Dobie Gray was a member of the cast of "Hair" at the Aquarius Theater in Hollywood, CA from 1968 to 1969. Background Gray was born in Simonton, Texas. Ellen Naomi Cohen (September 19, 1941 – July 29, 1974), known professionally as Cass Elliot, was an American singer. She was also known as "Mama Cass", a name she reportedly disliked. Elliot was a member of the singing group the Mamas & the Papas. After the group broke up, she released five solo albums. The Mamas & the Papas were an American folk rock vocal group that recorded and performed from 1965 to 1968, with a brief reunion in 1971. The group was a defining force in the music scene of the counterculture of the 1960s. Formed in New York City, the group consisted of Americans John Phillips (musician), John Phillips, Cass Elliot, and Michelle Phillips, and Canadian Denny Doherty. The stereo mix of the album is included on '' All the Leaves are Brown'' (2001), a double CD compilation consisting of the band's first four albums and various singles, as well as on ''The Mamas & the Papas Complete Anthology'' (2004), a four-CD box set released in the UK. ''Another Time, Another Place'' is the second solo studio album by the English singer Bryan Ferry. The album reached #4 in the UK charts in 1974. Recording took place in London at Island, Ramport and AIR studios. Like '' These Foolish Things'', ''Another Time, Another Place'' is essentially a cover album, with the exception of the title track, which gave its title to the album and was written by Ferry. Isaac "Redd" Holt (May 16, 1932 – May 23, 2023) was an American jazz and soul music drummer. He was the drummer on the album '' The In Crowd'' which earned the Ramsey Lewis Trio critical praise and the 1965 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Performance. Early life and education Holt was born in Rosedale, Mississippi, on May 16, 1932, and raised in Chicago. He first began playing drums as a student at Crane High School, where he played in an ensemble with future collaborators Ramsey Lewis and Eldee Young. Holt studied music at the Chicago Musical College and radio and television at Kennedy–King College. Career Holt enlisted in the United States Army in 1954 and was stationed in Germany, where he played with a military band, and upon his return worked with Lewis, alongside Young, from 1956 to 1966, in addition to recording with Earl Bostic and James Moody near the end of the 1950s. Eldee Young
Eldee Young (January 7, 1936 – February 12, 2007) was a jazz double-bass and cello player who performed in the cool jazz, post bop and rhythm and blues mediums. Born in 1936 in Chicago, Illinois, Young started playing upright bass at the age of 13. He was helped by his eldest brother who played guitar. He joined the Ramsey Lewis Trio in 1955. After a decade together he split along with bandmate, Isaac "Red" Holt to form the Young-Holt Trio. They changed their name to Young-Holt Unlimited in 1968. After they split in 1974, Young continued playing, mainly with small groups in Chicago. He also played with pianist Jeremy Monteiro for more than 20 years. Young also appeared on the albums of James Moody and Eden Atwood, among others. Young died in Bangkok, Thailand, from a heart attack at age 71.
