That's Right (album)
''That's Right'' is a studio album by American musician George Benson. It was released through GRP Records on July 30, 1996. ''That's Right'' was Benson's first album released with the label after twenty years on Warner Bros. Records and produced by longtime producer, Tommy LiPuma. The cover photograph is by Andy Earl and captures Benson in Burnaby Street, Chelsea, London. Critical reception AllMusic editor Thom Owens wrote that "like his other '90s albums, ''That's Right'' is jazz-inflected quiet-storm soul. It's quietly funky and always grooving, whether he's playing a light uptempo number or a silky ballad. As always, Benson's tone is smooth and supple – it's a pleasure to hear him play, even if the material he has selected doesn't always showcase his ample skills. In fact, the unevenness in material is the very thing that keeps ''That's Right'' from being on par with Benson's early '80s contemporary soul records." Green attended Berkeley High School, and participated in the school's jazz ensemble. In the later years of his high school career, he had a weekly trio gig at Yoshi's, which was his entrance to the world of professional jazz. After high school, he spent time in San Francisco, but became more successful on his return to New York. Green joined Betty Carter's band in April, 1983, and since 1991 he has led his own trio. It was released as the album's fourth single on February 24, 1997. Due to its use in a series of advertisements promoting Texas tourism, the phrase has also come to be used independently to describe the quirky and sometimes misunderstood attitudes associated with Texas. Lyrics ''That's Right'' is a lighthearted song that lightly mocks the popularity of cowboy fashions in urban settings, and reflects the general sense of Texan pride that newcomers and outsiders often misunderstand. The second verse is a tribute to the members of Uncle Walt's Band, a band actually from South Carolina who later became associated with the Austin, Texas country music scene. Those boys from Carolina They sure enough could sing But when they came on down to Texas We all showed them how to swing Now David's on the rad ...
