Texas's 37th Congressional District
Texas's 37th congressional district of the United States House of Representatives was created as a result of the 2020 census. It consists of a portion of Travis County, including much of Austin, and extends into southern Williamson County. It is represented by Lloyd Doggett. The district is contained predominantly in Travis County with a small portion of Williamson County, and consists of the majority of the city of Austin as well as small areas of its suburbs. From 1903 to 2005, the Austin area had been covered solely by Texas's 10th congressional district, which initially covered all of Travis County and areas from surrounding counties, but which steadily shrank over time as Austin grew more populated. Lloyd Doggett
Lloyd Alton Doggett II (born October 6, 1946) is an American attorney and politician who is a U.S. representative from Texas. A member of the Democratic Party, he has represented a district based in Austin since 1995, currently numbered as Texas's 35th congressional district. Doggett is the only Democrat to represent any part of Austin in Congress. Doggett was previously a member of the Texas State Senate and a justice of the Texas Supreme Court. Early life and education Doggett was born in Austin, the son of Alyce Paulin (Freydenfeldt) and Lloyd Alton Doggett. His maternal grandparents were Swedish. Doggett graduated Omicron Delta Kappa and received both a bachelor's degree in business administration and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where he served as student body president his senior year. The number of voting seats in the House of Representatives is currently set at 435, with each one representing an average of 761,179 people following the 2020 United States census. Texas's 35th congressional district is a district that was created as a result of the 2010 United States census. The first candidates ran in the 2012 House elections and were seated for the 113th United States Congress. This election was won by Lloyd Doggett, who previously represented Texas's 25th congressional district before redistricting. The shape of the district has been described as one of the ten most gerrymandered in the United States. The district includes parts of the San Antonio metropolitan area (primarily black- and Hispanic-majority areas), including portions of Bexar County, thin strips of Comal and Hays Counties, a portion of Caldwell County, and portions of southern and eastern Austin in Travis County.
