Tennis returned to the Summer Olympic Games as a demonstration sport for the second time in 60 years at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California, United States. It would become an official sport 4 years later at the 1988 Summer Olympics. Two events (men's and women's singles) were contested at these Games. Manuel Tolentino (born March 27, 1966) is a former tennis player from the Philippines. Career Tolentino represented his native country at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where he was defeated in the first round by the United States' Eric Amend. Tolentino for a time was the top player in the ITF junior rankings. The right-hander reached his highest singles ATP-ranking on August 31, 1987, when he became world No. 437. Tolentino participated in Davis Cup ties for the Philippines from 1984 to 1987, posting a 4–5 record in singles. In 1982, Tolentino clinched the men's single title at the Philippine Columbian Association Open at age 16 over 28-year old Ody Gabriel. Derrick John Rostagno (born October 25, 1965) is an American former professional tennis player. Career Rostagno's grandfather, Juan Rostagno, was a shooter for Argentina at the 1936 and 1948 Summer Olympics. Initially attending Stanford University, Rostagno was on the American tennis team at the 1984 Summer Olympics, in his freshman year. He had been injured in a bicycle accident earlier that year that nearly prevented him from trying out for the Olympics. Rostagno dropped out in his sophomore year to focus on his tennis career; by late 1986, he was ranked No. 66. After winning a tournament in Mexico in March 1986, Rostagno purchased a ticket home that included Mexicana de Aviación Flight 940 as a continuing flight.
