Teatro de la República (literally, ''Theater of the Republic'') is a Theater (structure), theater in the historic center of the city of Querétaro, México. It is one of the most important historic buildings in the city. In 1867, the trial of Maximilian I of Mexico was held in the theater. He would be convicted and sentenced to be executed. The theater would gain its current name after hosting the drafting of the Constitution of Mexico, Mexican constitution in 1917. A theater, theatre or playhouse, is a structure where theatrical works, performing arts, and musical concerts are presented. The theater building serves to define the performance and audience spaces. The facility usually is organized to provide support areas for performers, the technical crew and the audience members, as well as the stage where the performance takes place. There are as many types of theaters as there are types of performance. Theaters may be built specifically for certain types of productions, they may serve for more general performance needs or they may be adapted or converted for use as a theater. They may range from open-air amphitheaters to ornate, cathedral-like structures to simple, undecorated rooms or black box theaters. Maximilian I (; ; 6 July 1832 – 19 June 1867) was an Austrian Empire, Austrian archduke who became Emperor of Mexico, emperor of the Second Mexican Empire from 10 April 1864 until his execution by the Restored Republic (Mexico), Mexican Republic on 19 June 1867. A member of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, Maximilian was the younger brother of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. Before becoming Emperor of Mexico, he was commander-in-chief of the small Imperial Austrian Navy and briefly the Austrian viceroy of Kingdom of Lombardy–Venetia, Lombardy–Venetia, but was removed by the emperor.
