Taupō Railway Proposals
There have been a number of proposals to build a Taupō railway line as a branch railway linking the township of Taupō in the central North Island of New Zealand to Rail transport in New Zealand, New Zealand's rail network. One proposal proceeded as far as the construction stage before being stopped. Background By 1952, nearly every main centre in New Zealand was served by a railway, the exceptions being Kaitaia, Queenstown, New Zealand, Queenstown and Taupō. Taupō is one of New Zealand's biggest forestry centres and is a very popular tourist destination. Proposed routes North Island Main Trunk line The first time consideration was made to link Taupō with a railway was in 1884 when routes for extending the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) railway south from Te Awamutu to Wellington were being explored and surveyed. Taupo Totara Timber Railway
The Taupo Totara Timber Company Railway ("TTT Railway") was constructed by the Taupo Totara Timber Company (TTT) to link their milling centre at Mokai with the New Zealand Railways Department, New Zealand Government Railways line (NZR) at Putāruru in the Waikato region on the North Island, New Zealand, North Island of New Zealand. The more than long light railway line was operated from 1905 to 1947 by the Taupo Totara Timber Company. After the closure of the Mokai mill, the NZR purchased the stretch between Putāruru and the Kinleith Mill south of Tokoroa. This stretch of track underwent a major reconstruction, and is now(2024) part of KiwiRail's Kinleith_Branch, Kinleith Branch Line. History The line was built for the TTT between 1903 and 1905 by John McLean & Sons to carry sawn timber from the TTT sawmill at Mokai ( northwest of Taupō) to the government railway at Putāruru.
