Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra
The Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra (also known simply as Tafelmusik) is a Canadian orchestra specializing in historically-informed performance and based in Toronto. The orchestra plays period instruments appropriate to the era of music, including baroque, classical and romantic eras. The orchestra was founded in 1979 by oboist Kenneth Solway and bassoonist Susan Graves. Violinist Jeanne Lamon led the organization artistically from 1981 to 2014, and Elisa Citterio from 2017 to 2021. Artistic Co-Directors Cristina Zacharias, Dominic Teresi and Brandon Chui began artistic leadership in 2022, leading the organization through a pandemic recovery and renewal. Violinist Rachel Podger joined the artistic team in Fall 2024 as Principal Guest Director. The orchestra has sixteen full-time members who specialize in historical performance and technique, with additional musicians joining the ensemble when required. Jeanne Lamon
Jeanne Lamon, (August 14, 1949 – June 20, 2021) was an American-Canadian violinist and conductor. Biography Lamon was born as Jean Susan Lamon in the Queens borough of New York City and was raised in Larchmont, New York. Her parents were Isaac and Elly Lamon. Lamon said her interest in baroque music came from her mother's love of Bach and her ability to play the piano. At three, she indicated an interest in playing the violin and at the age of seven, she began studying the instrument. She studied violin at the Westchester Conservatory of Music with Editha Braham and Gabriel Banat. Later she attended Brandeis University in Boston where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree studying violin with Robert Koff, the original second violinist of the Juilliard Quartet. From Brandeis University, Lamon left the USA to study in the Netherlands with Herman Krebbers, then the concertmaster of the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. The Annex
The Annex is a neighbourhood in Downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The traditional boundaries of the neighbourhood extend north to Dupont Street, south to Bloor Street, west to Bathurst Street (Toronto), Bathurst Street and east to Avenue Road, Toronto, Avenue Road. The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM; ), branded as The Royal Conservatory, is a non-profit music education institution and performance venue headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Opera Atelier
Opera Atelier is an opera company located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was founded in 1985. The company mounts baroque operas and ballet, ballets from the 17th and 18th centuries that are presented in venues located in Toronto's Theatre District. For many years, their productions have been performed at the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres, Elgin Theatre. Patricia Barretto served as the executive director from 2011 to 2015. The company has performed baroque operas in New York, Houston, Stuttgart, Bremen, London, Singapore, Seoul, and Tokyo, and at the Glimmerglass Festival and Chateau de Versailles, France. Irsee
Irsee is a village and municipality in the district of Ostallgäu in Bavaria in Germany. The centre of the village is dominated by a monastery (Klosterbau), dedicated to the Virgin Mary The monastery was founded in 1186 by Margrave Henry of Ronsberg to house a community that had grown up around a local hermit. Bruno Weil
Bruno Weil (born 24 November 1949, in Hahnstätten) is a German symphonic conductor. He is principal guest conductor of Tafelmusik, the period-instrument group based in Toronto, Music Director of the Carmel Bach Festival in California, and artistic director of the period-instrument festival "Klang und Raum" (Sound and Space) in Irsee, Bavaria. He has served as General Music Director of Augsburg (1981–1989), and of Duisburg (1989–2002). He currently serves as Professor of Conducting at the State Academy for Music and Theater in Munich. He was a student of Hans Swarowsky and Franco Ferrara. Following his studies, he went on to win several important international competitions. In 1988 he replaced Herbert von Karajan at short notice at the Salzburg Festival, conducting three of six performances of Mozart's Don Giovanni (Aug. 19, 22 and 25). Salamone Rossi
Salamone Rossi or Salomone Rossi () (Salamon, Schlomo; de' Rossi) (ca. 1570 – 1630) was an Italian Jewish violinist and composer. He was a transitional figure between the late Italian Renaissance period and early Baroque. Life As a young man, Rossi acquired a reputation as a talented violinist. He was then hired (in 1587) as a court musician in Mantua, where records of his activities as a violinist survive. Rossi served at the court of Mantua from 1587 to 1628 as concertmaster where he entertained the ducal family and their highly esteemed guests. The composers Rossi, Monteverdi, Gastoldi, Wert and Viadana provided fashionable music for banquets, wedding feasts, theatre productions and chapel services amongst others.
