Taekwondo At The 2016 Summer Olympics – Men's 80 Kg
The men's 80 kg taekwondo competition at the 2016 Summer Olympics was held on 19 August, at the Carioca Arena 3. This event featured five-time Olympian and three-time Olympic medalist Steven López, representing the United States. López has competed in every Olympic game since 2000. Cheick Sallah Cissé won the event for Côte d'Ivoire, the country's first Olympic gold. Competition format The main bracket consisted of a single elimination tournament, culminating in the gold medal match. The top eight athletes in each event were seeded so as not to face each other in the preliminary round. The remainder of the qualified athletes were drawn randomly on 15 August 2016. Two bronze medals were awarded at the Taekwondo competitions. A repechage was used to determine the bronze medal winners. Carioca Arena 3
Carioca Arena 3 (Portuguese: ''Arena Carioca 3''), now named the Isabel Salgado Olympic Educational Gymnasium, is a sports training school and indoor stadium in Barra da Tijuca in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. World Taekwondo, formerly the World Taekwondo Federation, is an international federation governing the sport of Taekwondo and Para Taekwondo. Taekwondo at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro took place from 17 to 20 August at the Carioca Arena 3 inside the Barra Olympic Park in Barra da Tijuca. Around 128 taekwondo fighters competed in eight weight categories; four for men, and four for women. Qualification Taekwondo competition at these Games featured a total of 128 athletes, 64 in each gender, and 16 in each of the eight weight categories. Miguel Adrian Ferrera Rodríguez (born 25 May 1981) is a Honduran taekwondo practitioner. Ferrera qualified for the men's 80 kg class at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, after placing second from the Pan American Qualification Tournament in Cali, Colombia. Hayder Shkara (born 21 May 1990) is a former professional Taekwondo athlete now turned Australian lawyer. Early life Shkara was introduced to martial arts at the age of 8, whilst living in Sydney. He entered the Australian national team in 2006.
