TAB (Romanian language, Romanian: Transportor Amfibiu Blindat, translated ''Amphibious Armoured Personnel Carrier'') is the Romanian military designation of armoured personnel carriers. The TAB APCs were based on the Russian BTR (vehicle), BTR series until the early 1990s, with several improvements, including better diesel engines. After 1990, new TAB designs have been developed, such as the RN-94 and the Saur series, but none of these designs entered mass production. TABC-79
The ABC-79M (4x4) (Romanian: ''amfibiu blindat pentru cercetare'') armoured personnel carrier has been developed in Romania and uses some automotive components of the TAB-77 (8 × 8) armoured personnel carrier. Although previously known as TABC-79 (''transportorul blindat pentru cercetare''), it is now known as the ABC-79M. The ABC-79M is a simplified version of the earlier TAB-77 8x8 armored personnel carrier, which was itself a Romanian version of the BTR-70. Both vehicles share several common components. The ABC-79M is fully amphibious, and is equipped with a single water-jet for propulsion. Other equipment includes infra-red night-vision equipment, winch with 50m of cable and capacity of 5,500 kilograms, and central tire pressure regulation. The Saur 1 (formerly ''Zimbru 2006'') is an armoured personnel carrier developed by the Romanian company ROMARM in 2006. Development Late in 2006, ROMARM completed the first prototype of a new multi-role amphibious armoured infantry fighting vehicle called Saur. In the past this has been referred to as the Zimbru 2006. The Saur 1 was first unveiled at Expomil 2007. Saur 1 was developed to meet the requirements of the Romanian Armed Forces, Romanian Army but as of late 2007 no production orders had been placed for the Saur. BTR-80
The BTR-80 () is an 8×8 wheeled Amphibious vehicle, amphibious armoured personnel carrier (APC) designed in the Soviet Union. It was adopted in 1985 and replaced the previous vehicles, the BTR-60 and BTR-70, in the Soviet Army. It was first deployed during the Soviet–Afghan War. The BTR-80 was developed into the larger BTR-90 in the early 1990s. Description The BTR-80 is based on the BTR-70 APC, which itself was based on the BTR-60. It has a single 260-hp V-8 Turbocharger, turbocharged water-cooled diesel engine, an improvement over the twin Petrol, gasoline engines installed in the BTR-60 and BTR-70 vehicles.
