The Symphony No. 52 in C minor is one of the last ''Sturm und Drang'' symphonies composed by the Austrian composer Joseph Haydn while the composer was in residence at Schloss Esterházy, Esterházy in 1771 or 1772. It is one of a number of minor-key symphonies that Haydn composed in the late 1760s and early 1770s, the others being Symphonies Nos. Symphony No. 39 (Haydn), 39, Symphony No. 44 (Haydn), 44, Symphony No. 45 (Haydn), 45, and Symphony No. 49 (Haydn), 49. The symphony was described by H. C. Robbins Landon as "the grandfather of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 (Beethoven), Fifth Symphony, also created with mathematical precision and in extreme conciseness."H. C. Franz Joseph Haydn ( , ; 31 March 173231 May 1809) was an Austrian composer of the Classical period (music), Classical period. He was instrumental in the development of chamber music such as the string quartet and piano trio. His contributions to musical form have led him to be called "Father of the Symphony" and "Father of the String quartet, String Quartet". Haydn spent much of his career as a court musician for the wealthy Esterházy family at their Eszterháza Castle. Until the later part of his life, this isolated him from other composers and trends in music so that he was, as he put it, "forced to become original". Yet his music circulated widely, and for much of his career he was the most celebrated composer in Europe. He was Haydn and Mozart, a friend and mentor of Mozart, Beethoven and his contemporaries#Joseph Haydn, a tutor of Beethoven, and the elder brother of composer Michael Haydn.
