Supreme Court Of Idaho
The Idaho Supreme Court is the state supreme court of Idaho and is composed of the chief justice and four associate justices. The decisions of the Idaho Supreme Court are binding on all other Idaho state courts. The only court that may reverse or modify its decisions is the Supreme Court of the United States. Justices Justices are elected in non-partisan statewide elections and serve staggered six-year terms. Elections are held in the state primary, now in the spring, with run-off elections in November. The Chief Justice is selected by an election among the five justices and term length for that office is four years. Prior to 1983, the position went to the justice with the least amount of time remaining in his term. The court originally had three justices; it was expanded to five in 1921. Grangeville is the largest city in and the county seat of Idaho County, Idaho, United States, in the north central part of the state. Cathy R. Silak (born May 25, 1950) is the former dean of the Concordia University School of Law in Boise, Idaho. She is a former justice of the Idaho Supreme Court and the Idaho Court of Appeals. Silak graduated from New York University in New York City with a Bachelor of Arts in sociology and French literature, then attended the University of California in Berkeley, earning her Juris Doctor in 1976 from its School of Law (Boalt Hall). After working in private practice in San Francisco and Washington, D.C. and as a U.S. attorney in New York City, she moved west to Idaho, her husband's home state, in 1983. At age 40, Silak was appointed by Governor Cecil Andrus to the Court of Appeals in August 1990, the first woman to serve on Idaho's second-highest court. Cecil Dale Andrus (August 25, 1931 – August 24, 2017) was an American politician who served 26th and 28th governor of Idaho, for total of fourteen years. A Democrat, he also served as U.S. Secretary of the Interior from 1977 to 1981 during the Carter Administration. Andrus lost his first gubernatorial election in 1966, but won four (in 1970, 1974, 1986, and 1990) and his 14 years as governor is the most in state history. Linda Copple Trout
Linda Jayne Copple Trout (born September 1, 1951) is an American lawyer and retired judge from Idaho. She is a former chief justice of the Idaho Supreme Court, the only female to hold that position. Appointed by Governor Cecil Andrus as an associate justice in 1992, she was the first of four women to serve on the court. Born in Tokyo, Japan, Trout was adopted by a Boise pediatrician, Dr. B.I. "Bing" Copple, and graduated from Boise High School in 1969. She attended the University of Idaho in Moscow, and was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. Trout earned a bachelor's degree in 1973, and a J.D. from the UI College of Law in 1977. Latah County ( ) is a county located in the north central region of the U.S. state of Idaho. As of the 2020 census, the population was 39,517.
