St. Mary's Hospital Medical Center
St. Mary's Hospital Medical Center is a 158-bed not-for-profit hospital located in Green Bay, Wisconsin. It is part of the Hospital Sisters Health System. History St. Mary's Hospital Medical Center was created in 1903 by the Congregation of the Sisters of Misericorde. The original hospital building was located in downtown Green Bay. In 1960, Bishop Stanislaus Vincent Bona of the Diocese of Green Bay requested the sisters move their hospital to the west side of Green Bay, which was completed later that year, becoming the first and only hospital on the west side. In 1973, the Misericorde Sisters ended their sponsorship of the hospitals, and the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis assumed sponsorship of the hospital the following year. Hospital Sisters Health System, or HSHS, is a non-profit healthcare system headquartered in Springfield, Illinois. HSHS operates a network of 15 hospitals and other healthcare facilities throughout the midwestern U.S. states of Illinois, and Wisconsin. The Sisters of Misericorde were a religious congregation founded by Marie-Rosalie Cadron-Jetté (1794 - 1864) in Montreal, Quebec, in 1848 and was dedicated to nursing the poor and unwed mothers. History Rosalie Cadron was born on a farm north of Montreal on January 27, 1794. Her mother was a mid-wife, a skill she passed on to her daughter. At age 17, she married 33-year-old Jean-Marie Jetté, and eventually bore eleven children, many of whom died very young. Madame Jetté, now widowed, began her work by giving refuge to a prostitute. In the early 1840s, Bishop Bourget asked Jetté if she would provide a safe, discreet, and welcoming home for expectant unmarried women. Stanislaus Vincent Bona (October 1, 1888 – December 1, 1967) was an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as the bishop of the Diocese of Grand Island in Nebraska (1932–1944) and bishop of the Diocese of Green Bay in Wisconsin (1945–1967). Biography Early life Stanislaus Bona was born on October 1, 1888, in Chicago, Illinois, to John and Catherine (née Śmigiel) Bona, who had immigrated to the United States from Poland in 1881. He had five siblings: Thomas (born 1882), John (born 1892), Adam (born 1896), Adolph (born 1898), and Casimir (born 1901). Bona's brother Thomas P. Bona was also a Roman Catholic priest and longtime pastor of St. Mary of Perpetual Help Parish in Chicago (1921-1950).
