Southside Railway Station
Southside railway station, Glasgow, Scotland, was an early passenger terminal situated in the Gorbals area of the city. The station opened on 29 September 1848, for trains operated by the Glasgow, Barrhead and Kilmarnock Joint Railway, Glasgow, Barrhead and Neilston Direct Railway, which a short time later was absorbed by the Caledonian Railway. From 1849, until the opening of Glasgow Central railway station, Glasgow Central station in 1879, the station was used as a terminal for the Caledonian Railway's Lanarkshire services on its route to Carlisle which is now part of the West Coast Main Line. From September 1877 Southside station was replaced by Gorbals railway station, Gorbals station for trains on the Barrhead branch line to the new St Enoch railway station, St Enoch station, which had opened nearly a year earlier. Gorbals
The Gorbals is an area in the city of Glasgow, Scotland, on the south bank of the River Clyde. By the late 19th century, it had become densely populated; rural migrants and immigrants were attracted by the new industries and employment opportunities of Glasgow. At its peak, during the 1930s, the wider Gorbals district (which includes the directly adjoined localities of Laurieston and Hutchesontown) had swollen in population to an estimated 90,000 residents. Along with its relatively small size, this gave the area a very high population density of around 40,000/km². Glasgow, Barrhead And Kilmarnock Joint Railway
The Glasgow, Barrhead and Kilmarnock Joint Railway was a railway jointly owned by the Caledonian Railway and the Glasgow and South Western Railway, completed in 1873, and giving the latter a shorter access to its Carlisle main line. A branch to Beith was also built. It was formed by extending the earlier independent Glasgow, Barrhead and Neilston Direct Railway, which is also described here; that line was taken over by the joint company. Caledonian Railway
The Caledonian Railway (CR) was a major Scottish railway company. It was formed in the early 19th century with the objective of forming a link between English railways and Glasgow. It progressively extended its network and reached Edinburgh and Aberdeen, with a dense network of branch lines in the area surrounding Glasgow. It was absorbed into the London, Midland and Scottish Railway in 1923. Gorbals Railway Station
Gorbals railway station was a railway station serving the Gorbals area of Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. The station was originally part of the Glasgow, Barrhead and Kilmarnock Joint Railway. History The station opened on 1 September 1877Butt (1995), p. 106 as a partial replacement for Southside station, the previous terminus of the Barrhead branch line which was to be extended to the new St Enoch station which had opened nearly a year earlier. Gorbals station closed to passengers permanently on 1 June 1928. The line through the station remained open and in constant use until St Enoch closed to passenger traffic on 27 June 1966.
