SSAFA – the Armed Forces charity, the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association, is a UK charity that provides lifelong support to serving men and women and veterans from the British Armed Forces and their families or dependents. Anyone who is currently serving or has ever served in the Royal Navy, British Army or Royal Air Force and their families, both regulars and reserves, is eligible for their help. SSAFA’s professional staff and network of 7,000 volunteers assist more than 90,000 people every year, from World War II veterans to the families of young servicemen and women wounded or killed in Afghanistan. Major (United Kingdom)
Major (Maj) is a military rank which is used by both the British Army and Royal Marines. The rank is superior to captain and subordinate to lieutenant colonel. The insignia for a major is a crown. The equivalent rank in the Royal Navy is lieutenant commander, and squadron leader in the Royal Air Force. Fisher House UK
Fisher House UK is based in the grounds of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. With the slogan of "a home away from home for military patients and their families", the Fisher House provides a sanctuary for the families of military patients receiving treatment at the hospital. As the Queen Elizabeth Hospital is the centre for military medicine in the United Kingdom, some families have to travel hundreds of miles to be with their loved one. Facilities The house has eighteen large family bedrooms, complete with disability access, three lounges (one complete with projector screen and large DVD selection), a spacious kitchen and dining room, a children's playroom, and a spacious garden. Royal Air Forces Association
The Royal Air Forces Association (also called the RAF Association or RAFA) is the largest single service membership organization and the longest standing registered service charity that provides welfare support to the family of RAF members. Their goal is to "provide friendship, help and support to current and former members of the Royal Air Force and their dependants." It was founded in 1929. As of 2018, the RAF Association had a membership of over 74,000 including active duty RAF personnel, veterans and non-service individuals. The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund (RAF Benevolent Fund or RAFBF) is the Royal Air Force's leading welfare charity, providing financial, practical and emotional support to serving and former members of the RAF – regardless of rank – as well as their partners and dependents. Help for Heroes (H4H) is a British charity which provides lifelong recovery support to British Armed Forces service personnel who have been wounded or injured in the line of duty, and to their families, originally only since 11 September 2001, though this restriction was subsequently removed. The charity has supported more than 25,000 individuals since 2007, through its physical, psychological, financial, sports, fellowship, and welfare support services. It was founded in 2007 by Bryn Parry and his wife Emma, after they visited soldiers at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham. H4H has attracted high-profile trustees and patrons, and has the support of the Ministry of Defence. Cyril Kenneth Bird CBE (17 December 1887 – 11 June 1965), known by the pen name Fougasse, was a British cartoonist. He was perhaps best known for his work in ''Punch'' magazine (of which he served as editor from 1949 to 1953) and his World War II warning propaganda posters; "Careless talk costs lives" was one of the most popular. He also designed many posters for the London Underground. Early life Bird was born in London on 17 December 1887, the son of Arthur Bird, a company director. He was educated at Cheltenham College and King's College London (B.Sc). While at King's College he attended evening art classes at the Regent Street Polytechnic and at the School of Photo-Engraving in Bolt Court.
