An architect is a person who plans, designs and oversees the construction of buildings. To practice architecture means to provide services in connection with the design of buildings and the space within the site surrounding the buildings that have human occupancy or use as their principal purpose. Etymologically, the term architect derives from the Latin ''architectus'', which derives from the Greek (''arkhi-'', chief + ''tekton'', builder), i.e., chief builder. The professional requirements for architects vary from place to place. An architect's decisions affect public safety, and thus the architect must undergo specialized training consisting of advanced education and a ''practicum'' (or internship) for practical experience to earn a license to practice architecture. Vojteh Ravnikar
Vojteh Ravnikar (4 April 1943 – 17 September 2010) was a Slovenian architect. Early life Ravnikar was born in Ljubljana, in what was then the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, but spent most of his childhood years in the town of Nova Gorica in western Slovenia. After graduating from the Nova Gorica Grammar School, he attended the University of Ljubljana, graduating with a degree in architecture. Career Ravnikar began his architectural career in 1978, and designed a number of well-known buildings in Slovenia. His best-known buildings are in the coastal region of the country, and include the town hall of Sežana, the Piran Hotel in Piran, and the National Theatre in Nova Gorica. Ravnikar won a number of awards, including the 1987 (Slovenia's national architecture award), the 1990 International Piranesi Award, the 2003 Prešeren Award (Slovenia's national art award), and the 2006 Herder Prize (an international award for achievement in science, art, or literature). The architecture of Slovenia has a long, rich and diverse history. Modern architecture in Slovenia was introduced by Max Fabiani, and in the mid-war period, Jože Plečnik and Ivan Vurnik. In the second half of the 20th century, the national and universal style were merged by the architects Edvard Ravnikar and Marko Mušič. Prehistory and Antiquity Around 2000 BC, the Ljubljana Marsh in the immediate vicinity of Ljubljana were settled by people living in stilt house, pile dwellings. Ivan () is a Slavic male given name, connected with the variant of the Greek name (English: John) from Hebrew meaning 'God is gracious'. It is associated worldwide with Slavic countries. The earliest person known to bear the name was Bulgarian tsar Ivan Vladislav. Viktor Sulčič
Viktor Sulčič (1895 - 1973), also known as Víctor (or Victorio) Sulcic, was a Slovenian born Art Deco architect in Argentina. He was born in 1895 in Križ (in Italian ''Santa Croce'') near Trieste. He completing his studies of architecture in Florence and Bologna. Sulčič emigrated to Argentina in 1924. He joined two other architects there: José Luis Delpini and Raúl Bes. The two most famous buildings designed by the trio, are located in Buenos Aires: the Abasto market, completed in 1934, and Boca Juniors stadium La Bombonera, completed in 1940. Other works by Viktor Sulcic include a collection of water colours depicting South American landscapes and poems written in Spanish. He died in 1973 in Buenos Aires. Savin Sever
Savin Sever (27 June 1927, in Krško – 12 April 2003, in Ljubljana) was a Slovene architect. He was the son of a lawyer from the Littoral temporarily working in Krško, but he grew up in Maribor and Ljubljana. Sever is considered one of the most typical representatives of the Ljubljana school of architecture. His work represents a synthesis of the tradition of Jože Plečnik and the influence of Edvard Ravnikar, whom he studied under. Sever is considered one of the most important Slovenian architects after the Second World War. Edvard Ravnikar
Edvard Ravnikar (4 December 1907 – 23 August 1993) was a Slovenian architect. Ravnikar was born in Novo Mesto and was a student of architect Jože Plečnik. Later, he led the new generation of Slovene architects, notable for developing the Slovene architecture field's infrastructure, organizing architectural competitions etc. He was a professor at the Ljubljana School of Architecture. He also promoted Scandinavian architectural style in Slovenia, particularly Finnish achievements in architecture accomplished by those such as Alvar Aalto. His most notable creations feature prominently in Ljubljana, among them Republic Square, Cankar Hall, Maximarket department store, and the Museum of Modern Art. For his work, he received the Prešeren Award in 1961 and in 1978. He died in Ljubljana, aged 85.
