Secretary Of State Of Alabama
The secretary of state of Alabama is one of the constitutional officers of the U.S. state of Alabama. The office actually predates the statehood of Alabama, dating back to the Alabama Territory. From 1819 to 1901, the secretary of state served a two-year term until the State Constitution was changed to set the term to four years. Up until 1868 the secretary of state was elected by the Alabama Legislature, but is now popularly elected. The terms and over 1,000 duties of the office are defined by Sections 114, 118, 132, and 134 of the Alabama Constitution and throughout the Code of Alabama. ''The Alabama Legislature''. John Merrill (American Politician)
John Harold Merrill (born November 12, 1963) is an American politician who served as the 53rd secretary of state of Alabama from 2015 to 2023. He served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 2010 to 2014. Merrill is a member of the Republican Party. Early life Merrill was born in Wedowee, Alabama, and raised in Heflin, Alabama. His father served as the Cleburne County circuit clerk and a probate judge. At the age of sixteen he received the Eagle Scout Award as a member of his local boy scouts troop. In 1982, he graduated from Cleburne County High School. Merrill double majored in history and politics at the University of Alabama and received a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1987. Merrill interned for the United States Congress from May to July 1983, where he met representative William Flynt Nichols, who became his mentor. General Patrick Henry Brittan was born in Thornton Gap, Virginia on September 21, 1815. Biography He learned printing in Washington, D.C. and then migrated to Columbus, Georgia in 1839 to practice his trade. He married Ora Williams of Morgan County, Georgia in that same year. They would have nine children together. They moved to LaFayette, Alabama in 1843, where he established the ''LaFayette Tribune''. He relocated again in 1847 to Montgomery, Alabama, where he bought a half-interest in the ''Montgomery Advertiser''. He maintained his interest in the paper throughout several partnerships. In 1853, the ''Advertiser'' became the first newspaper in the state to be published using a steam-powered printing press. He started another newspaper, the ''Montgomery Messenger'', in 1856.
