Samuel Morse (Dedham)
Samuel Morse (1585-1654) was an original proprietor of Dedham, Massachusetts who served on the board of selectmen for two years. He was also a founder of Medfield, Massachusetts when it broke away from Dedham. He was elected a selectman before joining the First Church and Parish in Dedham. He was a signer of the Dedham Covenant. Morse was born in England in 1585 and came to Dedham from London. With his wife, Elizabeth, he was the father of Joseph, Abigail, John, Daniel, Samuel, Jeremiah, and Mary. He died in 1654. It was said in 1907 that "no family has ranked higher in eastern Massachusetts for the past two hundred and fifty years than the descendants" of Morse. Dedham, Massachusetts
Dedham ( ) is a town in and the county seat of Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 25,364 at the 2020 census. It is located on Boston's southwest border. On the northwest it is bordered by Needham, on the southwest by Westwood, and on the southeast by Canton. The town was first settled by European colonists in 1635. History Settled in 1635 by people from Roxbury and Watertown, Dedham was incorporated in 1636. It became the county seat of Norfolk County when the county was formed from parts of Suffolk County on March 26, 1793. When the Town was originally incorporated, the residents wanted to name it "Contentment." The Massachusetts General Court overruled them and named the town after Dedham, Essex in England, where some of the original inhabitants were born. Dedham Covenant
The Dedham Covenant was a covenant that governed the early settlement of Dedham, Massachusetts. It mandated that only those with similar, Puritan, community values could live in the town and set about a method for mediating disputes. It also required each resident to pay their fair share of taxes for the common good. Eventually 125 men would sign the covenant. Background In 1635 there were rumors in the Massachusetts Bay Colony that a war with the local Indians was impending and a fear arose that the few, small, coastal communities that existed were in danger of attack. This, in addition to the belief that the few towns that did exist were too close together, prompted the Massachusetts General Court to establish two new inland communities, Dedham and Concord. As Puritans, the first settlers came to Massachusetts in order to live and worship as they pleased. Ezra Morse
Ezra Morse (1643-1697) was an early resident of Dedham, Massachusetts and owned the second mill on Mother Brook. Personal life He was born in 1643 to Joseph Morse and was the grandson of Samuel Morse. He died in 1697. He married Joanna Hoare and together they had eight children: Ezra, Joanna, John, Nathaniel, David, Peter, David, and Seth. Around 1678, he built the first house in what would become Norwood. Seven generations of his family would live in the home until George Morse, one of his descendants, knocked it down and built a new house at 1285 Washington Street. Mills In January 1653 the Town of Dedham offered land to Robert Crossman if he would build a mill on the Charles where Abraham Shaw had originally intended to do so. Crossman refused, but Nathaniel Whiting, who owned the only mill in town, was so displeased by the prospect of a second mill that he offered to sell his mill back to the Town for 250 pounds.
