The women's 4 × 100 metre freestyle relay event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games as part of the swimming programme took place on 24 July at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre in Glasgow, Scotland. The medals were presented by Maurice Watkins, Chairman of British Swimming and the quaichs were presented by Denise Holmes, Emirates' Sales Manager for Scotland and North East England. Tollcross International Swimming Centre
The Tollcross International Swimming Centre is a swimming pool and leisure centre in Glasgow. It hosted the Swimming events at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The centre hosted the IPC Swimming World Championships during July 2015. Technical features It has one Olympic standard 50 metre swimming pool, which was extensively upgraded, and a second 50-metre pool which was added as a warm-up facility. The pool was reopened on 24 May 2013. The seating capacity of the Pool is 2,000, rising to 5,000 with temporary seating during the Commonwealth Games. Michelle Williams (swimmer)
Michelle Toro (née Williams; born January 2, 1991) is a Canadian competition swimmer who specializes in the freestyle in the sprint distances. She won a gold medal in the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto in the 4 x 100 m freestyle and in the 4 x 100 m medley relay. She also won a bronze at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the 4 x 100 m freestyle. She competed as part of Canada's Olympic team for the 2016 Summer Olympics, commonly known as Rio 2016. Williams would help fellow Canadians Taylor Ruck, Chantal van Landeghem and Sandrine Mainville in the women's 4 x 100 m freestyle relay heats, with the team swimming the third fastest time. She then had to make way for teenage star Penelope Oleksiak in the final, where Oleksiak helped anchor the team to the bronze medal. Ranomi Kromowidjojo
Ranomi Kromowidjojo (; born 20 August 1990) is a retired Dutch swimmer of mixed Dutch-Javanese Surinamese origin who mainly specialises in sprint freestyle events. She is a triple Olympic champion, winning the gold medal in the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay at the 2008 Olympics, and in the 50 m freestyle and 100 m freestyle at the 2012 Olympics. Kromowidjojo holds the world record in the 50 meter freestyle short course (25 m pool), and as part of the Dutch team she holds the world records in the 4×50 m, 4 × 100 m, and 4 × 200 m freestyle relays (short course). Inge Dekker (born 18 August 1985) is a Dutch former competitive swimmer who specialised in butterfly and freestyle events. She won the bronze medal with the Dutch women's 4×100-metre freestyle relay team at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, alongside teammates Inge de Bruijn, Marleen Veldhuis and Chantal Groot. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Dekker became Olympic champion in the 4×100-metre freestyle together with Ranomi Kromowidjojo, Femke Heemskerk and Marleen Veldhuis, setting a then Olympic record. Edward Maurice Watkins CBE (30 November 1941 – 16 August 2021) was a British solicitor and sports administrator best known as being a long-time director and the club solicitor of Manchester United. He had represented high-profile clients in criminal trials including Eric Cantona and Stuart Hall. After leaving Manchester United, he served in multiple other sports administration roles including as chairman of British Swimming, overseeing the team's successful Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympic cycles. He was joint senior partner of Brabners LLP solicitors in Manchester. Personal life Watkins was educated at Manchester Grammar School and University College London. Watkins died on 16 August 2021, at the age of 79, after suffering from prostate cancer.
