The Swedish Women's Association for the Defence of the Fatherland ( or ''Svenska Quinnoföreningen för fosterlandets försvar''), was founded in Stockholm on 9 April 1884. The founders of the association wanted to promote patriotism, a desire for Swedish national defence, and raise money for various defence purposes. Organisational aims and ambitions The association's first undertaking was to raise money for the purchase of land surrounding Karlsborg Fortress to strengthen its defences. Young people who were members of volunteer shooting clubs were sponsored by the provision of weapons and ammunition. The organisation also supported the Landstorm, a militia and territorial defence force created in Sweden in 1885. Karlsborg Fortress
Karlsborg Fortress ( sv, Karlsborgs fästning) is situated on the Vanäs peninsula in Karlsborg by lake Vättern, the province of Västergötland, Sweden. Construction on the fortress began 1819 to realize the so-called ''central defense idea'' adopted by the Swedish military after the Finnish and Napoleonic Wars. The site was chosen by Baltzar von Platen in connection with the construction of Göta Canal. The intent of the central defense idea was that the King, the Council, the Riksdag and central command functions would, in the event of an attack against the kingdom, pull back and ensconce themselves in this fortress in the middle of the country. Landstorm
(plural ) was a form of militia (see ) and territorial defence force created in Sweden in 1885. It consisted of all conscripts who had completed their service, generally men between 33 and 40 years of age, as well as a smaller number immediately transferred there. Charlotta (''Lotten'') Johanna Jakobina von Plomgren (13 October 1831 – 20 July 1916), was a Swedish activist for civil defence. She was one of the founders of Swedish Women's Association for the Defence of the Fatherland and was its president from its foundation in 1884 until 1914. Berta Persson (née Pettersson) (11 August 1893 – 9 December 1961) was the first female bus driver in Sweden. She was nicknamed ''Buss-Berta'' and drove the Kappelshamn–Visby bus route between 1927 and 1934. Early life and marriage Berta Albertina Pettersson was born on 11 August 1893 in Hallgård, Bara, Gotland. The Swedish Women's Voluntary Defence Organization ( sv, Riksförbundet Sveriges lottakårer (juridical), communicatively known as ''Svenska Lottakåren'', SLK ) is an independent auxiliary defence organization in Sweden.
