Swallowtail Butterfly
Swallowtail butterflies are large, colorful butterflies in the family Papilionidae, and include over 550 species. Though the majority are tropical, members of the family inhabit every continent except Antarctica. The family includes the largest butterflies in the world, the birdwing butterflies of the genus '' Ornithoptera''. Swallowtails have a number of distinctive features; for example, the papilionid caterpillar bears a repugnatorial organ called the osmeterium on its prothorax. The osmeterium normally remains hidden, but when threatened, the larva turns it outward through a transverse dorsal groove by inflating it with fluid. The forked appearance in some of the swallowtails' hindwings, which can be seen when the butterfly is resting with its wings spread, gave rise to the common name ''swallowtail''. As for its formal name, Linnaeus chose ''Papilio'' for the type genus, as ''papilio'' is Latin for "butterfly". For the specific epithets of the genus, Linnaeus applie ...

Papilio Machaon
''Papilio machaon'', the Old World swallowtail, is a butterfly of the family Papilionidae. The butterfly is also known as the common yellow swallowtail or simply the swallowtail (a common name applied to all members of the family, but this species was the first to be given the name). It is the type species of the genus ''Papilio''. This widespread species is found in much of the Palearctic (it is the only swallowtail in most of Europe) and in North America. Etymology This species is named after Machaon (mythology), Machaon () a figure in Greek mythology. He was a son of Asclepius. The specific name (zoology), specific epithet ' refers to Machaon (physician), Machaon, son of Asclepius in the works of Homer. Taxonomy ''Papilio machaon'' was named by Carl Linnaeus in the 10th edition of Systema Naturae, 10th edition of ''Systema Naturae'' in 1758, alongside nearly 200 other species of butterfly. Later, Pierre André Latreille designated it as the type species of the genus ''Papilio ...

Battus (butterfly)
''Battus'' is a New World genus of butterflies that are usually found around pipevine (genus ''Aristolochia'') plants. The caterpillars feed off the poisonous pipevines, making the insects poisonous themselves; they taste very bad to ward off predators. Since birds avoid these butterflies, other swallowtail species mimic their coloration. The common North American species are '' Battus polydamas'' and ''Battus philenor''. Etymology In Greek mythology, Battus is a shepherd who witnessed Hermes stealing Apollo's cattle. Because he broke his promise not to reveal this theft, Hermes turned him to stone. Species Listed alphabetically within groups:Glassberg, J. (2007) A Swift Guide to the Butterflies of Mexico and Central America, Sunstreak Books, pp.8-9. subgenus: ''Battuosa'' Möhn, 1999 :species group: ''belus'' Möhn, 1999 ::* '' Battus belus'' (Cramer, 1777) – Belus swallowtail ::* '' Battus crassus'' (Cramer, 1777) – Crassus swallowtail ::* '' Battus eracon'' (Godman & ...

Papilio
''Papilio'' is a genus in the swallowtail butterfly family, Papilionidae, as well as the only representative of the tribe Papilionini. The word ''papilio'' is Latin for butterfly. It includes the common yellow swallowtail ('' Papilio machaon''), which is widespread in the Northern Hemisphere and the type species of the genus, as well as a number of other well-known North American species such as the western tiger swallowtail ('' Papilio rutulus''). Familiar species elsewhere in the world include the Mormons (''Papilio polytes'', '' Papilio polymnestor'', '' Papilio memnon'', and '' Papilio deiphobus'') in Asia, the orchard and Ulysses swallowtails in Australia ('' Papilio aegeus'', '' Papilio ulysses'', respectively) and the citrus swallowtail of Africa ('' Papilio demodocus''). Older classifications of the swallowtails tended to use many rather small genera. More recent classifications have been more conservative, and as a result a number of former genera are now absorbed withi ...

Pachliopta
Red-bodied swallowtails, or ruby swallowtail (due to the color), are butterflies in the Papilionidae, swallowtail family, that belong to the genera ''Atrophaneura'', ''Byasa'', ''Losaria'', or ''Pachliopta''. They are generally found in Asia (Indomalayan realm). Insect collecting, Collectors have found the red-bodied swallowtails difficult to kill. Pinching the thorax, a method which kills most butterflies, is withstood and only stuns the butterfly temporarily. Life history The larvae resemble those of other Troidini. Fleshy spine-like tubercles, often with red tips, line the caterpillars' backs, and their bodies are dark red to brown and velvety black or shades of grey with a pattern of black lines. They feed on species of ''Aristolochia'' and ''Thottea''. Chrysalids are camouflaged to look like a dead leaf or twig. They are attached by a girdle and an anal pad. Adults are nectar feeding. Many species of red-bodied swallowtails show aposematism, and serve as models for Batesia ...

This genus includes the two largest butterfly species in the world, the Queen Alexandra's birdwing and the Goliath birdwing. ''Ornithoptera'' species are highly prized by insect collectors because they are rare, large, and considered exceptionally beautiful. Iphiclides
''Iphiclides'' is a genus of butterflies of the family Papilionidae (swallowtails). Taxonomy The genus was described by Jacob Hübner in 1819. It contains three species: '' I. feisthamelii'' ( Duponchel, 1832) (in some schemes as a subspecies instead), the poorly known '' I. podalirinus'' ( Oberthür, 1890), and the type species '' I. podalirius'' (Linnaeus, 1758). '' Iphiclides podalirinus'' ( Oberthür, 1890), the Chinese scarce swallowtail, is a little-known species occurring in China, that was also previously considered a subspecies of ''I. podalirius''. It is not known to be threatened but more data is required on this butterfly. '' Iphiclides feisthamelii'' ( Duponchel, 1832), the southern swallowtail, is found on the Iberian Peninsula and in Northwest Africa. These are often considered as subspecies of ''I. podalirius'', although some specimens from Northwest Africa can have notable genetic differences. '' Iphiclides podalirius'' (Linnaeus, 1758), the scarce swallowtail, ...

Graphium (butterfly)
''Graphium'' is a genus of mostly tropical swallowtail butterflies commonly known as swordtails, kite swallowtails, or ladies. Native to Eurasia, Africa, and Oceania, the genus is represented by over 100 species. Their colouration is as variable as the habitats they frequent; from rainforest to savannah. Some possess tails which may be long and swordlike, while others lack any hindwing extensions. ''Graphium'' species are often sighted at mud puddles. The more colourful species are popular with collectors and are commonly seen mounted in frames for sale. Well-known species include the tailed jay (''Graphium agamemnon''), common bluebottle (''G. sarpedon''), and the purple-spotted swallowtail (''G. weiskei''). One species, '' G. idaeoides'', is notable for being a perfect mimic of the danainid ''Idea leuconoe''. Larvae feed variously on Annonaceae The Annonaceae are a Family (biology), family of flowering plants consisting of trees, shrubs, or rarely lianas commonly known ...
