The Surgeon General () is the highest-ranking medical officer of the Danish Defence. Until 2023, the role of administrative leadership of the Armed Forces Medical Command (Denmark), Armed Forces Medical Command was also Surgeon General. History Until the beginning of the 19th century, the chief surgeon of the army was a temporary position established only in times of conflict. However, there was an increased wish to have a permanent position to plan, supervise and be available to the higher command authorities. As such the () was established on 21 April 1806, with the rank of major. In 1838, the title was changed to the (), which was elevated to Oberst#Denmark, colonel in 1848. The position was however demoted back to major by 1852. The rank was re-elevated to colonel on 3 January 1861. Armed (May, 1941–1964) was an American Thoroughbred gelding horse racing, race horse who was the American Horse of the Year in 1947 and Eclipse Award for Outstanding Older Male Horse, Champion Older Male Horse in both 1946 and 1947. He was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1963. Background Armed was sired by the great graded stakes race, stakes winner Bull Lea, the sire of Citation (horse), Citation. His dam was Armful, whose sire was Belmont Stakes winner Chance Shot (horse), Chance Shot and whose grandsire was the great Fair Play (horse), Fair Play. Besides being small for his age and very headstrong, Armed had the habits of biting and kicking hay out of his handler's pitchfork.
