The Supreme Court of the Maldives () is the Supreme court, highest court of the Maldives. History The Supreme Court was established on 18 September 2008 under Article 282 of the Constitution of the Maldives. The first amendment to the Judicature Act 2010, Judicature Act made the Supreme Court bench down to 5 judges, while the third amendment reversed the first amendment and made it back to 7 judges. In 2025, the government submitted a bill in parliament to alter the bench back to 5 judges, which was met with condemnation from opposition parties. The president later sent the bill back to parliament. Notable rulings *Four members of the country's Election Commission were set to spend six months in jail for 'disobeying orders'. Theemuge
:''Theemuge should not be confused with the House of Theemuge - the first dynasty of Maldives.'' Theemuge (Dhivehi: ތީމުގެ) is the site of the former presidential palace of Maldives in the Maafannu Ward of the capital, Malé. Upgraded to presidential standards in 1992 by then-president Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom, Theemuge served as the presidential palace until 2008, when Gayyoom was overthrown in the country's first democratic election. Mohamed Nasheed, the newly elected president deemed Theemuge of too high maintenance and re-declared Muliaage, the old presidential palace as the new Official Residence of the Maldives. Today, Theemuge houses the Supreme Court of the Maldives. Naming Theemuge is named after the dynasty of some of the first Muslim rulers of the Maldives from the late Lunar Dynasty (1141 to 1388). Ahmed Muthasim Adnan (; born 9 February 1965) is a Maldivian lawyer who is serving as the Chief Justice of the Maldives since 8 December 2019. He previously served as a Justice of the Supreme Court of the Maldives from 2010 to 2014. Education Adnan completed his Bachelor of Laws ( Honours) from the University of Buckingham, the United Kingdom and Master of Philosophy in Transnational Commercial Law from the University of Glasgow, the United Kingdom. Career Muthasim first started working for the government as the Director of Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1994 to 2001. Mohamed Muizzu (born 15 June 1978) is a Maldivian politician and engineer who has been serving as the 8th president of the Maldives and leader of the People's National Congress (Maldives), People's National Congress since 2023. He previously served as housing minister from 2012 to 2018, making him the longest-serving housing minister in Maldivian history. Muizzu was the mayor of Malé from 2021 until his resignation in 2023. Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom (; born 21 May 1959) is a Maldivian politician who served as president of the Maldives from 2013 to 2018. Yameen was elected president in the 2013 presidential election as the candidate of the Progressive Party (PPM), defeating Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leader and former president Mohamed Nasheed in the second round of the re-run, after the initial election was annulled. History Adhadhu was registered with the Ministry of Home Affairs on 22 February 2022. The Judicature Act (Law no: 22/2010) is a law enacted by the People's Majlis and signed into law by president Mohamed Nasheed on 21 October 2010. The bill was passed in parliament following 50 in favour, 4 against, and 6 abstaining. Amendments First amendment The bill to amend the Judicature Act was sponsored in parliament by Ibrahim Shareef, eventually being signed into law by president Abdulla Yameen on 11 December 2014. The Supreme Court bench decreased from 7 to 5 judges. Second amendment President Abdulla Yameen signed the second amendment into law on 17 June 2017.
