Strong Women's Championship
The is a women's professional wrestling world championship owned by the New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) promotion. The creation of the championship was announced by NJPW on April 27, 2023. The title is exclusively featured on NJPW's Strong brand and is usually defended at NJPW Strong branded shows in America. The inaugural champion was Willow Nightingale. The current champion is AZM, who is in her first reign. History In 2022, New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) established a women's division. On July 29 of that year, the promotion created the IWGP Women's Championship, the first women's title in the company's history, which was first held by Kairi. AZM, shortened from , is a Japanese professional wrestler, signed to World Wonder Ring Stardom where she is a member of the Neo Genesis faction. In Stardom, AZM is one-third of the current Artist of Stardom Champions (a belt she has held four times) and a two-time High Speed Champion. She also makes appearances for Stardom's sister promotion New Japan Pro-Wrestling under its Strong banner, where she is the current Strong Women's Champion in her first reign. She was previously a member of the Queen's Quest faction and its third, and assumed de facto, leader until Utami Hayashishita took over the group. Resurgence (2023) was a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). It took place on May 21, 2023, at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, California. It was the second event under the Resurgence name. Ten matches were contested at the event, including two on the pre-show. In the main event, Willow Nightingale defeated Mercedes Moné to win the inaugural Strong Women's Championship. In professional wrestling, a pin is a move where a wrestler holds an opponent's shoulders to the mat in an attempt to score a fall. A pinfall is a common victory condition, where the attacker pins an opponent and the referee makes a three count before the opponent gets released from the pin. Background The origin of the pinfall is the pin from amateur wrestling, whereby pinning an opponent to the mat will result in an automatic victory despite any points scored. However, while an amateur wrestling pin need be only one or two seconds, the count in professional wrestling is based on the referee's arm gestures, regardless of how much actual time elapses, and is to three slaps of the mat.
