Stoughton Station
Stoughton station is an MBTA Commuter Rail station in downtown Stoughton, Massachusetts, United States. It is the terminus of the Stoughton Branch of the Providence/Stoughton Line. Stoughton has one platform (split across Wyman Street) serving one track; the platform has a mini-high section for accessibility. The granite Richardson Romanesque station building, designed by Charles Brigham, has a clock tower. The Stoughton Branch Railroad opened from Canton Junction station, Canton – on the Boston and Providence Railroad (B&P) mainline – to Stoughton on April 7, 1845. The first two stations were destroyed that year by fire and wind. Stoughton was the terminal of the branch until 1855, and the terminal of passenger service from 1866 to around 1890. The present station building was constructed in 1887–1888; it was called Stoughton Central until 1896. Stoughton, Massachusetts
Stoughton (official name: Town of Stoughton) is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 29,281 at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. The town is located approximately from Boston, from Providence, Rhode Island, and from Cape Cod. History Stoughton was settled in 1713, and officially incorporated in 1726 from the southwestern portion of the large town of Dorchester, Boston, Dorchester. At its founding, it included the current towns of Sharon, Massachusetts, Sharon (which separated in 1765), Canton, Massachusetts, Canton (which separated in 1797) and Avon, Massachusetts, Avon (which separated in 1888). Thomas Stoughton
Thomas Stoughton (25 March 1521 – 12 June 1591), of Stoughton, Surrey and West Stoke, Sussex, was an English politician. Family The Stoughton family had long sat in Parliament for this area. Stoughton was the son of Lawrence Stoughton of Stoughton and Anne née Combes of Guildford. Stoughton married twice, first to Anne Fleming from London, no recorded children. His second wife, whom he married on 27 February 1553, was Elizabeth Lewknor of Tangmere, Sussex. They had two sons, both MPs: his heir Sir Laurence (who represented Guildford) and Adrian (for Haslemere and Chichester), as well as two daughters. Career Stoughton was a Member of Parliament for Chichester in March 1553, October 1553, April 1554 and 1563. Nicholas Stoughton (20 September 1592 – 4 March 1648) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1624 and 1648. He was the son of Sir Lawrence Stoughton, MP and his wife Rose Ive, the stepdaughter of William Hammond, MP. He was the brother of George Stoughton, MP. Margaret Stoughton Abell (June 25, 1908 – February 22, 2004) was an American forester. Early life On June 25, 1908, Abell was born as Margaret Stoughton in Osage, Iowa. Abell's father was Herbert Leonard Stoughton. Abell's mother was Elizabeth (née Higgins) Stoughton. Education In 1929, as a student and Junior Forester, Abell wrote a paper titled "A Glimpse of the Appalachian Forest Experiment Station". In 1930, Abell graduated with a bachelor's degree in forestry from Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa. Career In June 1930, Abell joined the Appalachian Forest Experimental Station in Asheville, North Carolina. Abell was also a skilled photographer. Laurence Stoughton
Sir Laurence Stoughton (1554–1615), of Stoughton, Surrey and West Stoke, Sussex, was an English politician. He was the son of Thomas Stoughton, MP and the brother of MP, Adrian Stoughton and educated at the Inner Temple. He inherited his father's estates in 1576. Jeffrey R. Stoughton (born July 26, 1963) is a Canadian retired curler. He is a three-time Brier champion and two-time World champion as skip. Stoughton retired from competitive curling in 2015. He is currently the National Men's Coach and Program Manager for Curling Canada, as well as being the head coach of the Canadian Mixed Doubles National Team. Career Stoughton's first national championship came in 1988 when he won the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship. Israel Stoughton (c. 1603 – 1644) was an early English colonist in Massachusetts and a colonial commander in the Pequot War. Returning to England, he served as Roundhead, Parliamentarian officer in the First English Civil War. Life Born in England, a younger brother of John Stoughton (clergyman), John Stoughton, Stoughton emigrated to the Massachusetts Colony in 1630.
