The State Comptroller of Israel ( ''Mevaker HaMedina'', , literally: ''Critic of State'') inspects, reviews, and audits the policies and operations of the government of the State of Israel. The State Comptroller's Office is also the government's office for public complaints. It serves under the aegis of the Knesset and has authority to examine all agencies of government. Micha Lindenstrauss (; 28 June 1937 – 2 May 2019) was an Israeli judge and the State Comptroller of Israel between 2005 and 2012. Biography Micha Lindenstrauss was born in Berlin, Germany. His family immigrated to Mandatory Palestine when he was two years old, on the eve of World War II. He studied law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He was married and a father to three daughters, one of whom is a judge. His cousin Joram Lindenstrauss was an Israeli mathematician and one of his distant relatives, the Israeli mathematician Elon Lindenstrauss is a Fields Medalist. Eliezer Goldberg
Eliezer Goldberg (; 24 May 1931 – 12 March 2022) was an Israeli judge and civil servant who served on the Supreme Court of Israel, and as the State Comptroller of Israel. Biography Eliezer Goldberg was born in Jerusalem, Mandatory Palestine. There he attended the Hebrew Gymnasium Rehavia, graduating in 1949. From 1952 to 1955, he studied law in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he specialized in the office of the president of the Jerusalem District Court. Goldberg died on 12 March 2022, at the age of 90. Judicial career From 1957 to 1964, Goldberg worked as a lawyer in a number of law firms. From 1964 to 1965, Goldberg served as a Traffic Judge. Miriam Ben-Porat (, née Shinezon, 26 April 1918 – 26 July 2012) was an Israeli jurist. She was the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court of Israel and the State Comptroller of Israel from 1988–1998. Biography Miriam Shinezon (Ben-Porat) was born in 1918 in Vitebsk, Belarus (then Russia), the youngest of three sisters and four brothers. She grew up in Lithuania, where her parents owned a textile factory. After finishing high school in 1936, she immigrated to the British Mandate of Palestine by herself. Most of her family was murdered in the Holocaust. In the Yishuv, she changed her name to Ben-Porat. Yitzhak Ernst Nebenzahl (; 14 October 1907–19 December 1992) was appointed State Comptroller of the State of Israel after the establishment of the state in 1948. He served as State Comptroller and Ombudsman from 1961–1981. Biography Born in Frankfurt on 24 October 1907, Nebenzahl immigrated to Mandate Palestine in 1933 and settled in Jerusalem. He served as an officer in the Haganah. Nebenzahl and his wife Hildegard had four children. Yosef Haim Shapira (; born 5 July 1945) is an Israeli attorney and judge who served as the seventh State Comptroller of Israel from July 2012 to July 2019. Biography Shapira was born in Jerusalem. He earned a law degree at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1971 and in 1972 was certified as a lawyer. As part of his reserve duty, he served as a judge at the IDF's Military Court of Appeals, as a colonel. In 2000 he received a Master's degree in criminology from the University of Leicester in England. Shapira is married and a father of three children and two grandchildren.
