State's Attorney (film)
''State's Attorney'' is a 1932 American pre-Code drama film made at RKO and starring John Barrymore. George Archainbaud directed and the film could more or less be considered a warm up for Barrymore when he later went to Universal to film the similar '' Counsellor at Law''. Remade in 1937 and 1951 both titled ''Criminal Lawyer''. The story was supposedly based on the life of criminal lawyer William J. Fallon, who defended 126 homicide cases without any convictions. Plot Tom Cardigan is a near-alcoholic defense attorney who handles a lot of cases for his childhood friend, gangster Valentine "Vanny" Powers. Powers thinks it would be a good idea for Cardigan to become Attorney General so his friend could do an occasional favor in return for Powers delivering the votes. Cardigan warns him that if Cardigan goes over to "the other side," Powers can expect no favors from him. George Archainbaud
George Archainbaud (May 7, 1890 – February 20, 1959) was a French- American film and television director. Biography In the beginning of his career he worked on stage as an actor and manager. He came to the United States in January 1914, and started his film career as an assistant director to Emile Chautard at the World Film Company in Fort Lee, New Jersey. In 1917 he made his own directorial debut '' As Man Made Her''. During the next three and a half decades he directed over one hundred films. After the beginning of the 1950s he moved to television. While working at RKO Radio Pictures in the beginning of the 1930s, he showed some artistic and skillful eye with many of his films. Paul Causey Hurst (October 15, 1888 – February 27, 1953) was an American actor and film director. Career Hurst was born in Traver, California, of one quarter Cherokee and one quarter Seneca people, Seneca descent. In 1933 he performed in "Eve the Fifth" at the Beverly Hills Little Theatre for Professionals. Hurst is best remembered for two roles: as the Yankee deserter who trespasses at Tara (plantation), Tara and is shot by Scarlett in ''Gone with the Wind (film), Gone with the Wind'' (1939); and his characterization of the drunken and sadistic vigilante Smith in ''The Ox Bow Incident'' (1943).
