Starky's
Starky's Restaurant and Bar, or simply Starky's (sometimes stylized as Starkys), was a gay bar and restaurant in Portland, Oregon's Kerns neighborhood, in the United States. Established in 1984, the venue became a fixture in Portland's gay community before closing in 2015. It hosted LGBTQ events and served as a gathering space for leather enthusiasts and the Oregon Bears, among other groups. Starky's received a generally positive reception and was most known for its Bloody Marys, brunch, and outdoor seating. Description and history Starky's, located at 2913 Southeast Stark Street, was a gay bar and restaurant in Portland's Kerns neighborhood. It was established in 1984 and housed in a building that was constructed in 1935. Starky's was known for its patio and outdoor seating, in addition to serving American cuisine, including burgers and steak. Joe Waldroff and Greg Simshaw purchased the bar in September 2004. Portland Gay Men's Chorus
The Portland Gay Men's Chorus (PGMC) is a gay-identified, non-profit choral group based in Portland, Oregon. The group was founded in the spring of 1980 when three founding members, inspired by a performance of the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus, placed an ad in a local gay newspaper looking for potential members. Soon after, on June 19, 1980, the group sang in their inaugural concert at the Metropolitan Community Church of Portland. PGMC is the fourth oldest chorus to publicly identify as gay by using that description in their official name. Since its founding, PGMC has been active in the civic and cultural life of Portland and Oregon. Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) is an LGBTQ advocacy organization founded and led by friends and family of LGBTQ people. PFLAG is a national organization presiding over decentralized local and regional chapters. PFLAG has nearly 400 chapters across the United States, with more than 350,000 members and supporters. Cascade AIDS Project (CAP) is a nonprofit organization based in Portland, Oregon, in the United States. In LGBT culture, red dress parties are events in which people wear red dresses, regardless of gender. The Red Dress Party fundraising event began in Portland, Oregon in 2001, with only 75 people in attendance. History This event started as a promise kept by a gay male couple after they received HIV diagnoses. They each promised to wear red at their funerals instead of typical black attire, usually worn at funerals, in order to bring attention to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the United States. Q Center
Q Center is an LGBTQ community center and nonprofit organization in Portland, Oregon, United States. It was founded in part by former mayor Sam Adams. The space has also housed Pride Northwest, which organizes the city's annual pride parade and other festivities. In 2023, Q Center was the largest LGBTQ community centre in the Pacific Northwest.
